Aero Mirrors - My Turn

I was sitting around this afternoon, nothing to do but taxes, when a friend dropped by to show me the 'new' mirrors he got for his M3 - some punk-ass kids stole the originals, along with his front bumper (they even have it on security video, but can't do diddly with it).

He asked me when I was going to install my new mirrors. I'm famous now for buying stuff and not installing it (930S wheel, Sherwood Shifter, DSL router....) So, I dragged out the box cracked a couple beers and took a look.

Of course, I didn't bother to look anything up here first - flying blonde.

I'd heard that there was some spring or other that was a b!tch to install, and figured it was the valvespring-looking bit. Figured out where it was supposed to go, and decided there was no way in he11 I would ever be able to get that together by hand.

So, how to fab a spring compressor for it? About an hours worth of head scratching, trial, & error and I came up with:

A step-by-step pic essay (no text yet) of how to compress the spring is at

I'm sure others (John Walker?) have come up with ways to do this as well. With the right tool, it's effortless.
