I have a 76 911s Targa. I wanted some advice on installing the strut bar.
I see the attachment bolts at the shocks (3). If I remove these to install the bar, will this change the alignment of the shocks? ( by removing the bolts and reinstalling them) Is it better to install with the tires on the ground or in the air? I just went through the gas tank, fuel pump, accumulator and fuel filter saga. Once I filled the rusty tak with gas, the crude tried to kill the car. Thank you |

With the wheels on the ground, you should be able to remove the bolts and install the brackets without moving the struts. Helps if you happen to have bilstein struts (pressurized).

I have Koni shocks. The strut bar I have requires the three bolts are removed that hold the small plates. I was thinking about fixing the plates maybe with sealant so they did not move when I remove the bolts and then reinstall. The plates provide the adjustment and a little movement may put the front out of alignment.

If you are installing an ER strut bar just do one side at a time. One of the reasons I went with the ER strut bar was that I thought it was the least likely to mess up the alignment and didn't require any fabricating or carving up any metal for clearance. My rod ends did have the red dots. The most difficult part of the job was getting rid of that horrible tar. The tar on my car was rock solid. Horrible stuff and I am still working on it. Heat gun, solvent and wooden sticks. Still blasted through the finish in some places. I replaced the attach bolts as the bolts I had were pretty chewed up. Luckily I bought a bunch of Belleville washers from Pelican. Couldn't find the correct finish bolts but did find some 12.9 on ebay.

The attachment plate on my strut bar is thick enough that looks like it would replace the little plates shown above. Schnell is in Florida and has been out of action for the past week.
