Is this a 911ST bumper ?
I don't seem to have had any luck with my previous post on this topic so I've used a different title to this question:
I have recently aquired a steel front bumper which I think may be for a 911ST. It is based on the '72/3 S steel bumper but the ends are slightly flared out - presumably to match flared front fenders. I don't have an original '72/3 S to compare it with but from looking at pictures of the front bumper on these cars it appears as though the gap in the centre of the lower 'lip' is wider than standard. Can someone with an original '72/3 S bumper measure the width of this gap for me ? Also was the '72/3 S bumper fabricated in 2 halves (L & R) which were welded together ? My bumper has a verticle weld visible in the centre of it when viewed from the rear. Anyone else think that this might be a 911ST bumper ? This is the picture of GT Racing's grp ST front bumper from their website: Andy '69 911E--------------->R Last edited by andyjboy; 02-02-2003 at 02:26 AM.. |

I could be wrong, but I don't think ST's originally came with the early S style spoiler design...it first appeared on the 908 though, so it could be...

ST bumpers didn't have the lip at the bottom. They were a smooth curve like an early T I believe.

I have never seen a picture of an ST with a lip either. The fact that it is a pressed steel item seems to suggest that it came from the factory: maybe a 2.8 RSR touring? |

Hello
Those could only be from a 2,4 S based RSR body, however the factory used FG on racecars. But the M474 wide body option was a stock order option for all 911 engine versions and stock cars still received steel parts ( as Porsche didnīt had long time expirience with the paint on FG parts and stayed on the conservative side ). My guess is that this is a non factory mod as the factory would had smothed out the contour but maybe done with bodysoldering...... However rapid engeneered factory parts for testing didnīt showed to much care on the detail........... But those parts wherenīt intentet to be bolt on costumer cars. Only the factory experts and old factory workers can maybe sheed some light on that. Grüsse |

Paul/Bill/Nick - the later ('72?) ST's came with this style front :
Also I am sure that I seem to remember that Jim Avis said some of the ST bumpers were made of steel ? Andy '69 911E---------->R |

Andy, I still think there should be some debate about whether or not it's an ST bumper...but if the bumper you have is steel? You've got a rare bumper, regardless! You see, I have PANO's dating back to the mid 1960's, also a copy of EXCELLENCE WAS EXPECTED...and the photos I see of ST's have the "T" shape bumper. But I think Roland's words bear weight here, possibly for a wide fendered '72S. Or, you may have a '73RSR bumper, every bit as collectable and valuable as one for an ST. No matter what, it's a "way cool" bumper! I also wish to welcome back Roland! We've all missed his input and wish him well. Paul
