996 (996TT) DIY Remapping?
I posted a this on the 996 forum, but the traffic there is rather light, so maybe someone will notice it here. Admin: apologies if this is not appropriate. Feel free to delete or move.
So I'm currently preoccupied with my 996 Turbo, and want to be able to read and study the ECU program, maybe even re-map myself. I have the equipment and have re-mapped my 3.2 Carreras, and want to get my feet wet with my 996Turbo. Anyone play around with these maps? There are lots of shops offering tuning so it's probably not rocket science. Feel free to PM me if you'd rather privately discuss this. |
try rennlist , the 996 traffic is pretty good there.

Not that familiar w/ 996 DME but I do have the tech info on it and early Boxster. These used Motronic 5.2.2 which was a modified version of 5.2 used in '96 up 993. The biggest difference I see is the control for vari-cam and moving the Hall sensors to the cams from the distributor. . and some safety interlocks like fuel pump shut off tied to airbag deployment. The Hall mark of these systems fro. '97 up is that the DME is flashable but to do so it needs to be unsoldered from the motherboard, then resoldered after flash. |
Buy an Accessport.

Thanks for the response guys.
I haven't been on Rennlist for probably 10 yrs. My login probably doesn't work. lol Bill, the 996TT has Bosch ME7.8 and I think I found an interface that doesn't need removing the chip, but it is a little involved. Matt, I want to be able to read and flash the ECU with an adjusted map of my own, not load what ever some tuner sells me. Here's what I'm finding. aah, I knew they upgraded at some point just didn't know when and on what models, they usually do start w/ the turbos.
Aren't the latest ones flashable through the OBD2 port? |
I have a COBB unit and use their AccessTuner software on my 996TT. I find it as easy to use as the Haltech on my 3.4L air-cooled motor.
As Bill commented - the later ECU is a lot more advanced, with maps for things that never existed on older engines - things like torque control, knock control and cam timing just to name a few. The good thing about the AccessTuner is that you don't have to mess with all of the advanced stuff if you don't want to - but can still play with the "normal" things like AFR and ignition timing. Richard. |
Bill you are correct. And as Richard indicated the AccessTuner/AccessPort can do that, but I'm looking to do perhaps more in-depth tuning. Maybe the AccessPort can do that, Richard? (how far can you go with the Access Tuner?)
I'm use to working with the tables of the older DME. Looks like things have gotten a little more convenient, as can be seen in this video for example. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJ12y35kS5g |

I've never seen a shareware access to the 996 TT. For years EVOMS had it locked up and then Cobb came in. It really is the best most user friendly system there is. On Zwarts PPIHC car not only did they alter boost, timing and fuel by gear, but they made it change as he progressed up the mountain at the push of a button. It is a proper hot swappable system with none of that welding in a flashed chip that people used to do. |
Although I have accessTUNER - I ended up getting a custom tune from a remote COBB pro-tuner. Its really not that hard once you have the COBB as you just take some data logs and send the files to your pro-tuner and they send them back. I am located in Iowa and my pro-tuner was in California and we literally tuned the car over the phone / internet in less than a day.
On my 996TT I run Tial GT28 turbos, Fabspeed exhaust, ID 1000 injectors, wagner intercoolers, a bunch of other bolt-on mods and run the OEM ECU Mafless (MAF sensor removed). With this setup I can easily generate 1.3 bar of boost at less than 3,000 rpm :) With accessTUNER you can adjust practically all engine parameters. It also has a large amount of helpful descriptions for most of the tables and a good amount of explanations. I have included a few screenshots below: As Matt said - this is system is very user friendly. I considered a "plug and play" AEM Infinity however discovered that the COBB system gives you practically all of the same adjust-ability - with great support from COBB and the pro-tuner network. I am very happy I went with the COBB system. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1503113601.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1503115687.jpg And a photo of the 996TT during the last engine drop to pin / replace some of the coolant hoses: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1503116217.jpg |
the RL 996tt forum is pretty good. I frequented it for the 10 months I had my "6t", which they MUST be referred to there...;) there is a high rate of clownery, but wade thru the poo and you might be all good.
