1980 SC: Removing sump plate... How much oil is under there?

Hi all.

Car was serviced last month including oil change... I now have a leak at the oil sump plate. I have new gaskets to fit, but don't want to drain all the brand new oil out?
So, can I remove the sump plate only and catch (hopefully a tiny amount) of oil?

Thanks.

I've never done it but it would be messy. At a guess there would have to be around 1 liter of oil there.

I've never measured it before but I would have thought it would be about 3 litres.

I wouldn't try to reuse the oil as the cost of the extra top up oil is little. Remember on these cars the oil from the oil tank is not filtered before it is pumped to the engine bearings so it would be very easy to cause damage if the oil you collect is contaminated in some way. (The oil is only filtered when it is returned to the tank.)

You need to start he motor for a short time to get the oil out of the case and into the oil tank.
There will be some loss, a quart or two, don't reuse the oil in the Porsche

Thanks all. Yes there was about 3L come out, managed to avoid an oil slick!

It looks like one of the M6 studs has stripped/loosened due to age.
I assume the studs are held in with a thread lock, is there any particular type I should go buy?

Loctite 243 I think is the one you want. It has tolerance for oil residue.
