'88 911 brake lights out. Can any one Help

I would greatly appreciate anyone who can lend assistance.

I have an '88 911 cab, that just yesterday all three of the brake lights are out. I did a search here on threads that may have been posted before but I did find anything related to my year. I check the fuses and they seem old but fine. I've only own this car since august and this is the first realy thing that has gone wrong. Can anybody give me some guidance. Also, any idea for the best place to buy fuses.

Thanks in advance,

Fitz

you can buy fuses at most retail autoparts stores, they will look different (kind of like the old glass fuses, but they are the right length and have pointed ends.

You may need new switches which are screwed into the master cylinder.

When this happened to my car it was the switches on the side of the master cylinder. They're not exensive and easy to get to. Took me about a half hour to replace them both.

Steve/Ron,
Thanks for the reply!! BTW Ron, I go by Fitz on the Internet, but I to am a Ron. I hate to ask this but, after all I am a novice. Where is the master cylinder located? On all mother cars it's in the engine compartment, but I didn't see it in the rear engine.

It's located in the luggage compartment.

I agree with the above and that it is the switches on the MC. I've replaced mine on my 87 twice now. Don't know why they keep going out but they are easy to replace.

The switch is in the left rear corner of the luggage compartment on top of the master brake cylander. Should be very visable with wires going in to cap. Check the power at both sides of the fuse box (both ends of fuse) first. It's easier and less expensive to replace afuse than a switch. Fuses can be purchased from Pelican and Napa.com has these also. Good luck.

this may help. I ran into a similiar problem. There are tools you may need to make the job replacing the switch easier if they are causing the problem. I later found out there may be different manufacturers for the switch.

Help, No brake lights

To all,
Thanks again for the reply. I went to the local parts store and picked up the switch and some replacement fuses cause I noticed other fuses that looked old. When I went through and replaced some of the old fuse I apparently was one off one from the brake light fuse when I originally asked for help. I replaced the fuse that I thought was for another part of the car but is was for the brake lights and the lights work. So, right now I don't need to replace the brake light switch yet. Thanks again for all the help. What a great board.
