My odometer reads about 1.2 miles for every mile actually travelled and the speedo reads low until you get over about 70mph. Car is a 71 911T. Speedo looks to have been replaced at some time. I suspect may have used a speedo with different internal gear ratio.
The speedo housing has "26/31 04 1173" and "VDO T W077" stamped into it. Would appreciate it if any early 911 esp 70-71 could look at their speedo and post the numbers stamped on the housing. Plan to use this info to verify I am purchasing the correct used replacement speedo assuming the current one can't be regeared/recalibrated for this car. I suspect the 26/31 is the internal gear ratio of the speedo. Anybody out there know for sure. I will contact Palo Alto Speedo repair Monday but thought I would try to find out more info here first. Thanks, Craig |

Craig,
It sounds like someone put a '75 speedometer (which was calibrated for a 3.875:1 ring & pinion) in your car. But, any speedo shop should be able to re-gear it for your 4.429:1 ring & pinion. ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa 1992 Dodge Dakota 5.2 4X4 parts hauler |

Warren,
Thanks for the input. What years had the same ring and pinion as my 71? Looks like you got yourself a nice speedo on Ebay. I was watching, but wasn't sure if it would be right for my car or if my speedo could be repaired. |

Any speedo from '65 thru '74 would be compatible gear-wise, but mounting-wise for the rubber ring, I believe '70 through '74 would work and have essentially the same appearance with the silver-center 'cap' on the needle.
Yeah, that 120 mph job will go nicely with my 'Donohue' transaxle gearing ... [3.18, 2.0, 1.6, 1.26, 1.0] ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa 1992 Dodge Dakota 5.2 4X4 parts hauler |

Warren,
Thanks again...I am going to the first annual Silver Star Recycling Porsche show and swap tomorrow. Maybe I'll see a choice 70-74 speedo for a resonable price and if not sounds like I can have my current speedo reworked to have it perform correctly in my car. I'll have to plead ignorance as to what a "Donahue" transaxle is but close ratio looks to be for hillclimb or moderate speed track events. Craig |

Craig,
I discussed the 'Donohue' gearing recently in this thread: http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/Forum3/HTML/014453.html ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa 1992 Dodge Dakota 5.2 4X4 parts hauler |
