What year of car?
DO NOT START THE CAR.
look on the left side inner fender in the engine compartment for leaks around the accumulator and filter. check under the car at the tunnel for the fuel and return lines.

When mine has gas smell in the engine bay, I found the leak was at the little J hose back near the firewall, toward the left.

Jumper the fuel pump fuse or the DME relay to pressurize the system to help find the leak. Will allow you to help find the leak without throwing electrics thru the engine which may cause a fire.

I know a common area that needs to be checked is the gasket to the fuel sending unit.

88 ? really. you have to change the fuel distribution hoses that go to the injector rack ,regardless of whether that is actually the leak. they will be hard a rock and probably leaking. Or, you could just drive around with a fire extinguisher between your legs..
