Tuner Studio- Laptop?

Hi,

Just starting to install a Bitz kit in my 77. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/967150-bitz-kit-install-stock-77-911s.html

I pulled out an old Sony laptop with XP and a serial port and thought it would be great for this, but I'm having a difficult time getting it to do even basic internet connections, I can connect to google, but trying to update the Norton 360 is not behaving and I get lots of connectivity error messages.

Bottom line is my computer skills are very pedestrian and I don't much enjoy trying to figure them out.

I see that for a couple hundred bucks, you can pick up new laptops; they won't have a serial port, but there are adapters for that, so would a new $200 computer with windows 10 home work with tuner studio?

Thanks,
Rutager

I am not using Win 10 (using Win 7), but people on the MS forum are using Win 10 with TS with no issue.

W10 and TS play very nice. No issues. HOwever, don't buy a new, cheap laptop unless you can upgrade the RAM. A W10 machine with 4GB of RAM will be close to useless.

The VAIO will work just fine. You don't really need online access to run TS. Maybe only for software updates the first time.

If you have not used the laptop in a while it might take some time to update all the files. I would go into the startup sequence and turn off everything you don't need. Minimize background activity and TS will run without any issues.

Thanks guys,

Jamie,

I guess my worry right now is if I'll even be able to download the software; it is a download, correct? I will only use the laptop for the EFI, so not needing internet after the download.

Maybe I should try it first and then if not get a new laptop with enough RAM to work.

You could also Download the install package from another computer and transfer via USB key.

The only problem is some JAVA environments need to be installed to run properly.

I would just spend some time to get the old VAIO up and running and then try the install.

It wouldn't run Hulu because of a Java issue, I'll see what I can figure out, but I'm not a computer guy- usually just muddle through and get super frustrated!

Thanks for the encouragement; I thought, "what the heck, they have a free version, why not just see if it will download" and it did!

Now, my understanding is the free version is the same download as the paid one and once you purchase the license they supply you a code and it "unlocks" the other features, correct?

yes. the paid version unlocks some excellent features.

you will want to get the package that includes MegalogViewer. Also, If you have an Android phone or tablet then the bluetooth connection and ShadowDash are great for datalog functions.

Thanks for all the help so far, I'll be needing more, I'm sure, but feeling like I'm heading in the right direction.
