914 Type IV motor.....

Mikez has it right, its a type 4 motor, anywhere from 1700 to 2500cc, the late model 912 used the type 4 as a base motor, which can be built up to some un-godly displacements, I built one in 1976 that was 2.5 liters. Doug Kubany

Matter of fact....that MIGHT be Tony Bray's car. 914 powered 912 that he calls Gunby...due to the unique color. I sold him the carbs....it's a 2.0 with 44 webers.

yeah, talked to the owner for a few minutes ( he was parked pretty close to me) . Can't remember if it was a 912e engine with the carbs instead of fi. I do remember that some 912e ('76) components were used, just can't remember exactly what. Hey, there was a LOT to take in there, and I didn't know there was going to be a quiz later!! max

No fan for cooling?

its down there out of sight....kinda looks like the heater fan (squirrel cage) on a '68 buick

Yes, there is a squirrel cage fan right in the silver shroud at the back. It is driven off the crank. These motors can be made to have 180 hp or better and live. Stock was a little under a 100. CA smog models had under 90 hp. When the '76 model clears the smog hurdle here is CA, all 912s will be exempt. I look to see a resurgance in the interest in these cars. I can build a real decent motor for a 914 or 912e for under 2 grand. Compared to a small displacement six, that's a bargin. But, alas, they don't have that sound.............:p
