911 901 Transmission alternative

Is there any other transmission that will fit a 1971 Porsche 911 other than the 901. I know the 915 will fit as well, but was curious about a more modern transmission, maybe a newer porsche 6 speed.

Not sure what they are running in the late 90's early 2000's, but i found a couple for sale locally, just dont know if they will work.

Thanks

G50.mated to 3.6 would be a killer combo for that

What was made after the G50 or did they still utilize it up in the early 2000's?

Thanks

The 996 Carrera gearbox won't bolt up. They changed the crankcase bolt pattern on the M96 engines. The GT3 continued to use a G50 based G96 cable shift gearbox, but you are looking at a $15k gearbox and another $10 to put it in. And cutting the hell out of your tub. All the 6spd boxes of any variant(including 993 G50) are substantially longer than an old 901/911 gearbox.

Those 901/911 transmissions from the '70 and '71s are a sweet transmission. Smooth, and they shift well. As long as you don't have a 250+ horse motor they are great.

Only problem is the MICKEY MOUSE clutch release arm pivot. If you can solve that problem stay with the 901 unless you are going big horsepower.

HAHAHA, im not sure about the clutch release

I have a 901 5 speed, unknown condition. I bought the car, it had been sitting quite a while.

I dislike the pattern quite a bit, the whole up and to the left for reverse is strange to me, i assume it is fixed with the 915.

Is the 915 a lot better than the 901, or about the same just with the correct pattern for shifting?

The dog leg shift pattern is derived from and much better for racing applications since shifting between 2-3 and 4-5 occurs more than from gears 1 to 2. This gives you a straight shot in those gear selections. So it really did not require a 'fix'. It just takes some getting used to.

Mercedes used the dogleg in the 190e 2.3-16
BMW in the E30 M3
And many others

If you haven't driven the car yet and just have an intellectual aversion drive it before spending $5k or more to "fix" it. The 915 is same basic design with a street car shift pattern and gears several mm wider for added strength. I prefer the lighter 901 family of boxes and more usable shift axis for 2-3.

The dogleg 901 is awesome. Why change it?

Well, i did not know it was that good, so i reckon its a keeper
I've never driven the car , yet. Its under extensive repair. So i guess i'm being judgemental on the transmission

I just thought since they changed it on the 915's that the 901 was a turd

The 915 is a stronger transmission which was needed when Porsche went to the larger motors. A 901 will last with no problems behind (infront?) of a 2,2. I autocrossed a 901 for years with my 190 HP 2,5 motor with no trouble.

I would highly recommend a short shift kit added to your shifter and put in all new bushings in the shift shaft and coupler. You will notice in this forum lots of threads about 915 shifting problems and none about the 901.

What Gordon said. Only downside is factory used lsds are unobtanium whereas the y are fairly available for 915.
