Question Ignition Lead Question

Can I use a set of modern silicon ignition leads (from a Buick V6 kit) on my 69T by cutting off the ends and screwing the Beru ends into the leads?

Cheers

i suppose you could, but the screw in the connector doesn't get as much of a bite in the carbon core as it would in the metal, and could pull out easily.

I tried, no luck. In silicone wires the surface is the only thing that conducts. The inside of the wire is carbon/glassfibre (one that does not conduct electricity). I tried connecting those to "screwable" connectors. Sometimes they worked and sometimes they did not.

Copper ignition wire is VERY cheap. 4 meters is enough and it should not cost more than 4$.

John,

Have you tried to find any bulk rolls of name branded ignition cable? AC-Delco, Motorcraft, Belden should have wire-cored cable of either stainless-steel or copper available in 7 mm. As much as I like silicone, Neoprene or Hypalon works just fine for five years, minimum.

Thanks Zen, I originally thought it may be a waste of time but was prepared to try.

Warren, I did buy some no-name brand of bulk wire the other day ($3) but it is only 5 or 6 mm, so I have not used it. I'll try ringing around for the good stuff.

Thanks everyone

John,

Head down to your local V8 performance shop and try a universal fit set of Top-Gun stainless steel solid core wire - I think it is made in Australia and pretty cheap. Just cut the ends off and screw the Berus on. You even get two extra to practice with.

Matt Smith used it, and it works fine... they have 8mm, which JUST fits inside the Berus. I think it only comes in Red, but Black might also be available.

Cheers Cam, I'll check it out. How's ignition/dizzy stuff going?

Umm, I need to do a post to update the MSD - As the car is a '69 I needed the tach adaptor but now the tach works fine too and I satisfied my anal tendencies and tidied up all the wiring to make it just so.

Haen't sorted the dizzy. AM discussing with the guy whether to spend US$80 on a dizzy or US$(censored) to buy a 3.0 RSR spec engine on an SC case with twin plugs and MOTEC controlled throttle body injection. Oh, and brakes and a 915 too. Will let you know if the 901 is for sale
