911SC 1982 IMS Bearing Cover leak

I'm having a disastrous time of trying to seal what started as a little drip on my sons 1982 coming from the IMS or Intergear coverI. I took it off cleaned it fitted a new gasket and it became worse, yesterday I removed the cover, sanded it on a flat surface and refitted it using a new gasket and gasket sealer, worse still. Last evening I tried again, I noticed that when you fit the cover it moves around slightly on the three studs, also that the case halves didn't match perfectly. I had a spare cover so tried again, using only the gasket this time, now its like the Exonn Vadez!

Question is, can I use RTV instead of a gasket, if so what brand and any good advice on how to do it?

Thanks

Hmm, that's weird. Perhaps its an issue with the case parting surfaces. But yeah, it's not elegant and it wouldn't be my first choice but I would put the stock gasket on and use Permatex ultra Black.

Tighten the 3 nuts in stages, going from one nut to another, and don't put hardly any torque on them. Hand tight is good enough. The more you torque it the more it will leak.

Thank you for the reply, I am putting torque on it, could that be the problem?

That cover has 3 studs protruding from the case correct? I would pull the studs and carefully clean and level out the surface reinstall the studs spread on permatex and gently torque the cover on. Don't use silicone ever.

The torque on those M8 studs will be under 18 lbs ft., which feels like a little more than hand tight. The cover isn't really holding anything on there except that little plate. So no need to kill it.

If you are putting lots of torque on there, and not doing it evenly, you'll be warping that plate or creating gaps.

Go easy.

On my old '80 SC I had a leak at the same place. A new seal didn't fix it. I brought it to a shop and they used some kind of a sealant with a gasket (might have been RTV but I know it wasn't silicone), it's been so long ago I can't remember exactly what they used.

Whatever it was it worked because it never leaked again.

Yep! Remember, the more you tighten, the more you squeeze out gasket material. Go easy.

Apply sealant to gasket surface and press the parts together. Let the assembly dry overnight then tighten the fasteners until you see the sealant begin to bulge out. Don't over tighten. You just need it to seal.
