I'm worried I might really f@ck this up. My automotive skills are...well, and old friend said something like this
"There's the right way to do things, and then..and then there's the Bingham way." I agree. I know the tech article is there. I'll bring my digital camera. I may try and call someone from a cell phone or something if something goes miserably wrong! (I'll post, and someone can mail a phone number to my carrera_cabriolet@yahoo.com) Nervously... ------------------ 1984 Rockin' Cab www.geocities.com/carrera_cabriolet |

Kurk,
After you disconnect all the ancillary parts and before you remove the chain tensinor cover, make sure the #1 cylinder is at tdc. This will keep the cam from moving when you remove the tensioner. You also have to do this on the right side for the #4 cylinder. Steve |

Relax, Kurt. We're here. I'll pray for you until about 12:00 PST, then be available for questions. BTW, I think I used a stiff wire to tie the chain tight somehow. A dowel of the prefect length would probably work also. I used a sharp-nosed 'vise grip' type plier to ensure against dropping any rails. The rails "snap" onto the spuds that are bolted in. A string through the rail holes woudl also help keep them out of the case, or a rag in the case. Be gentle as you make the hydraulic connections. Fingers work best to ensure against cross-threading and don't put them on too tight. If they leak, you can snug them up a little more. The passenger-side hose can leak, particularly at the left (inside) end if not mated properly. Good luck, Kurt.

I used some plastic zip locks to tie the chain to the sprocket on the left side. Before I take off the tensioner, is there anything wrong with this that I'm not considering that could allow it to move anyway?
Thanks for the advice guys...BTW. My left tiny oil line was blocked totally...blew it out (synth oil kinda tasty)...but it could only be blown out after the oil line was removed because the dirt or whatever was stuck at tensioner inlet I assume. I"m going to put the new tensioners in regardless. |

no zip ties needed. just set engine to #1 TDC and swap out the tensioners. the cams will stay put there, unless you try to turn them.

Okay, it's done. Wasn't too bad. Used the zip ties anyway, just to be sure. I drove it around and it didn't explode, so I guess everything's okay.
It sounds about the same as before it made that terrible sound. A day later and a bit wiser. I'm beat. Thanks guys. ------------------ 1984 Rockin' Cab www.geocities.com/carrera_cabriolet |
