Stock A/C can be great
 

Thought i would let other members know with a little patience and work your stock
A/C can work like new again.
My 84 Carrera ex US , with only 44000miles, has all the original A/C on ,so when
i charged it only held half cold A/C for a couple of days.
So i ordered new Hoses from Griff at Kuehl,which he is very helpful ,and i thank him
for his help,also ordered the cut out switch that is fitted to the end hose ,incase of
high or low pressure blow out.
started by rebuilding my compressor, then removing my evaporator, stripping and cleaning fitting new seals, remove all old hoses, fitting new ones, removing both front and rear condenser,cleaning out with break clean. checking all items for leaks.
i used about three cans of break clean for cleaning , contrary to what others have used.
After completing i am really happy as i have really cold A/C, with a total cost of about
$850 US.
Here in Australia it gets from high in the 80 to 100 f in temp and high humidity
where i live ,so its marvelous to drive my 911 again
So without spending money on newer upgrades and parts, you can do the same
for your 911 next summer.

What did the compressor rebuild entail? Also, how did you test stuff for leaks?

Looking at doing similar on wife's recently (re)acquired 79 sc, i reckon the replacement hoses are a no-brainer but not sure yet about what else will be involved. Threads like this are definitely helpful.

Great work. I like how you cleaned up the plennum and replaced the seals.

Did you replace all of the hoses, including the front-to-rear ones that run the length of the car? I've heard those are a real PITA. If not, which ones did you replace? I would also be interested in how you checked for leaks. Did you pressurize and check the system before and after?

Hi Yes replaced all five hoses from Griffiths, yes they are a bit of a job, but dont be in a hurry ,and they will all come out know problem,same when fitting new ones,.
A new compresssor seal kit is only about --$20-25 dollars, from US,and its not that hard to replace .,the old seal comes out easy,fitting new one take your time,read instructions, use plenty of oil when doing it, check and recheck the new seal when fitting
to make sure it is seated correctly.
You dont flush out the compressor just use the oil that you intend to use when cleaning.
checking the both condensers i used a can of brake cleaner in each,then hold each condenser up on its ends for about half an hour to make sure there was know leaks,
i did not pressure anything.

The large hose flexable hose from evaporator to dash i used pluming down pipe plastic thats the in photo., and when seperating the evaporator, those joiners slide
dont try and pry, the plastic will break.

Good job. I replaced the "spring" tabs with sheet metal screws after drilling pilot holes. I also put ring electrical terminals under the screw heads - this allows getting the screws in and out later while possibly avoiding dropping them down under the plastic box.

Hi Peter thought some one from here would ask that,
i had six cans sent by container to Brisbane from Los Angeles
cost me $60 shipping agent here local. .and a couple of months wait time .
Locals in US are lucky, all different sizes , makes, cans, etc available from
parts stores. regards.

Yes live in Australia, moved from New Zealand to Sacramento, were i lived for
10 years, then moved back to Ausy because of warmer climate.

I replaced all hoses in my 930 as the one that runs to the front had holes in it.
one other tip, have your coils pressure checked for leaks BEFORE you put it back together and find out you still have a leak.
I tested all mine and he supposedly fixed the rear condenser but it still leaks.
AC has been sitting dormant for a year now.

I really want to put the factory rear condenser back in and charge with R12 just to see how good I can get it to work but I don't want to spend much on the condenser because I would rather have one of kuels for the rear.

anyone want to donate a rear cond for a 930 for testing?

don't use brake clean. they sell AC flush.
even residual brake clean can be very bad for rubber parts

Yeah I actually used hychill in mine. But I am curious if I can ship a bunch of r134 back. Very handy thing to keep in the garage for future projects.
