Is there a tried and true keyless product for our cars?

No doubt, I'm lazy. But using the key to lock and unlock the doors is kind of annoying. Especially in the rain.

Is there a product that you guys have used that works well with our older cars?

I guess I could get a car alarm that does lock, if they even still make them anymore lol.

Thoughts?

I installed an Alpine alarm many, many, many years ago and then used relays and universal lock actuators. It worked well except unlocking by hand had a fair amount of resistance due to the actuators.

I have since removed the locking/unlocking parts.

There are still many alarm manufacturers out there, maybe look for a higher quality actuator. Mine were about 9 bucks each, got to be better ones available?

This one comes with some actuators- look at bit like what I had, but maybe a bit nicer.

Why would you need actuators if you have power locks?

Doesn't the alarm system tie into the lock system and just open/close them electronically, as if you were hitting the button in the car?

I did it and it works great. Check this thread:

Anyone know how the power door lock actuators work?

and post 30 here:

Updating most of the electrical system - an experiment

Less than $50.

Oh, and an advanced search with "keyless" in the title will reveal some helpful threads/posts.

PO installed an UNGO remote that locks and unlocks the doors and has been working fine for years. (No alarm, just a key fob with remote lock and unlock.)

Just about any after-market central locking kit will work but I'd recommend removing the "flip over" springs in the lock. I can't find a photo but there's a small spring in the mechanism that holds the lock in the unlocked or locked position. It's U shape with a coil in the middle. You can see it working if you remove the lock from the door and work the lock/unlock lever. Just grab it and remove it but keep it in a safe place. The next owner of your car may want to remove anything after-market.

Why remove the flip over springs?

Sure. Why wouldn't I drive it in the rain? It's a Porsche and it has wipers and headlights lol.

Drive mine in the snow. It's a car.

I don't lock my doors. Someone going to steal it they are going to steal it. I keep nothing of value inside.

The after-market solenoids aren't very strong which means they may not lock or unlock the car every time. If you remove the flip over spring they'll work every time.
I did this more than 15 years ago on my own 911SC and have never had any issues but as I wrote before don't throw away the flip over spring.

Agreed. It's a car. Meant to be driven. I have a friend with a cgt and it gets a ceremonial drive once a year. Makes me sad :-)

I'm not sure what the area is like where you live Matt, but in Florida it's pretty much a gimmee that people will take whatever isn't locked or bolted down lol.

Some of the new alarms are pretty cool. They've got tilt switches, impact sensors, ignition cut, perimeter alarms, even two-way remotes that are good for 3 miles and will alert you if something is happening to the car. Some will even connect to your smartphone. I've got some really nice wheels on their and a pretty amazing stereo I'd like to hang on to.

I know most use their cars once in a while, but I'll drive mine anywhere for anything. It's too much fun to just take it out on a nice Saturday morning once in a while. I've got 55k on it now and am shooting to hit 200k

Interesting. My car already has power locks which mean I assume that I already have solenoids in the doors as I can unlock lock both sides at the same time with the key or use the lock/unlock button inside.

Can't I just tie into the stock ones or will they not work with an aftermarket system?

There are about as many people in my state as in metro miami. I would never got catch a show or ball game in Denver in the car but I'll take it to the grocery or dinner or a rmnp trailhead and not worry about it. I've considered getting a siren that goes off when the doors open. I'm not that far along yet. I just ripped out an 80S Clifford, two CD players, and amp and crossover and a couple hundred feet of wire. After I restore my harness I'm not sure will want to corrupt it again.

We took out an 80's Blau junk, a broken sound stream amp, and some speakers that were so dry rotted that the rubber surrounds were gone. Yanked an ancient K40 too that wouldn't stop beeping. My installer also pulled out what appeared to miles of wire that went to nothing. Car probably had a number of stereos and it obviously had a car phone at one point based on some old mounting points on the lower console.

Ended up adding two amps under the pass seat totalling around 1400 watts. Two 10' subs where the rear seat bottoms were, 6.5" separates in the doors, 4" co ax in the rear, dsp, and a dsp controller in the dash where the radio use to go. I also got some replacement visors and we molded a small tablet into the drivers visor as an audio source for FLAC files. If you like music and you like old 911's, it's a nice combo :-)

These were easy to install, are inexpensive and work great. This thread gives you the scoop. Add-on power door locks project

You may be able to use your OEM solenoids but I don't know for sure. I haven't done it. There are two commonly available lock motors or solenoids.

This is the standard design that's been available since the late 70s. These are the ones in my car.

This is a more recent design and supposed to be heavy duty but I've never used them.
