Oil question

I have a case of oil, Valvoline VR-1, that has been sitting in the garage for the past two years. Is the oil still good to use for an oil change?

does your car have a cat on it? if so that oil is not good for it.

VR-1 is compatible with cats. I've used it for years and no issues.

adias..look in search there is a threads called the ultimate oil thread..it is long but good reading and learning tool..

Castrol GTX 20W-50 is on the less exotic end of scale. Dino oil.

Brad Penn, well, it's new name, is a bit better.

Bottom line, as stated by wiser ones than me, new acceptable oil/fluid is the best choice over your old stuff.

I know all those oil types. None of those are 'good' for cats and we use them anyway, right? I am just wondering which oil T77911S recommends for these engines with cats.

My point is that the Valvoline VR1 is not worse for cats than any of those. Brad Penn's very high ZDDP is far worse (for cats) and may be even too much for engine protection. I have changed from Brad Penn to VR1.

i...just wonder what oil has to do with the catalyst???i might be getting old but i have never seen any issues with oil and catalyst..fuel yes but oil??

Used this oil for over 100K miles in my 86 930. It meets MB 229.1, which covers cars with cats....would send oil out for analysis at each of my 5K old changes and results always came back continue to use, but I still changed it. I have 135K on it now, no oil leaks, no smoke and case has never been apart. After talking with AMSOIL, I have just now switched over to ZROD 20/50 for the additional anti corrosives due to me not driving car as much as I used to.

I am with you. I don't know with respect to cats.

I know you don't use silicone gasket sealer on an O2 sensor, but I am ignorant with respect to oil type and potential cat damage.

FWIW,

I have NEVER, ever replaced a cat in 44+ years that failed due to oil contamination and I've seen quite a few of these cars in that period..

I have replaced cats due to poor maintenance practices that caused the cores to melt & fuse together. One aspect is correctly maintaining oil level in these dry sump engines and you'd never believe what I've seen people inadvertently do.

Remember cats are far cheaper than cams & rockers so I'd recommend using a good oil in these engines; Brad-Penn is one of them.

I posted this link a week or so ago on a weekend but I don't think many people saw it. I don't know if this link has been posted here before but it has a lot to think about and is written by a well qualified mechanical engineer. It's a long read but worth thinking about.

He debunks a lot of conventional wisdom on zinc vs other wear, synthetic vs conventional oil, diesel oils vs gas oils, viscosity vs wear protection, etc.

Take a close look at his wear ratings for the various oils we use. His ratings are in Section 1. There's not a lot of 20w50 oils tested but for those using diesel oils pay attention to the wear ratings.

I'm sick to death of the idea that the higher ZDDP oils are ruining Cat
converters. We have used high ZDDP oils in our Pcars since converters
first appeared in the '70s. ALL approved oils had high ZDDP until
2004 when the SM rated oils appeared. I repeat, all oils SJ and earlier
had higher ZDDP!
The main reason the newer oils were reformulated with lower ZDDP is the EPA required the auto mfgrs to increase the CAT converter warranty to 80K or 8yrs and by mandating SM or higher rated oils the mfgrs save warranty money and also by that time they had converted most motors to roller cam followers and no longer needed ZDDP for valve train wear problems.
To sum it up, all of our '70s-'90s Pcars were built to use high ZDDP
oils, converters and all. Just my $.02
