interior restore... rs or original?
I'm getting ready to freshen up the the interior, but can't decide whether to go rs look (less is more) or keep it original.
The carpet is shot and the front door pockets have speakers cut into them... I've already deleted the radio... so I either buy new (used) door pockets and carpet, or I buy rs door panels and lightweight carpet... so what does everyone think? My first inclination is to go the rs look, but I've never seen one in person so I am relying on my imagination. On the otherhand an original interior is the safe way to go. BTW, the car although an early "s" was stolen in the early 70's so is without the body serial numbers...so originality / concours is not an issue.

With no numbers, no intent to join the concours crowd? It's a trite saying, but in this case, true...do whatever turns you on. It IS your car...to hell what anybody else thinks.

Keep in mind that the RS "carpet" is not really carpet, it's rather thin Perlon felt. Counter to the RS ethos, I'm actually thinking about putting some thin padding underneath, otherwise it will take a beating against the bare metal ridges of the interior.

That vid is Le-Mansy. Nice! Is that Slate? My vote goes for original interior.

Great video! Makes me wish for spring. I would build it the way you want. You are the one who will have to love it. Michael

Paul, no I won't be joining the concours crowd.... maybe the next one will be more "presentable"
![]() I always wanted an early s (for performance reasons) but frankly couldn't afford it when I was finally in a position to buy a second car... then this one came along and it was priced in line with a medium condition "t" ... so I bought it... and haven't regretted it.... oh ya, and its my first porsche so I wanted one to learn / work on... I don't think I would enjoy it as much if it was a more rare and valuable car. I have a couple of first edition William S. Burroughs' in the bookcase which I'm scared to take the plastic bag off of... if you know what I mean.

YTNUKLR,
the video was actually taken by the previous owner, pelicanhead '77, so i can't take credit for it... but i agree it is well done (it "made" me buy the car)... the colour is not slate, but dolomite grey metallic a 1979 colour.

Here are some pictures from the Euro2002 show last fall of an original lightweight RS interior, or so I was told. Although, isn't that a 930 wheel? and I realize the belts are newer. Maybe they will help you decide.

Curt,
Okay, I'm an idiot. How do you open the doors from the inside? Beautiful interior, BTW. Jim |

I voted RS mostly because I'm sick and tired of fixing those silly door pockets in my car. I'll be going RS sometime soon.

You open the door by pulling the leather strap. A bit of instruction is usually needed for passengers as they like to use the leather strap to pull the door closed! -- Curt

Ok, now I see. Use the handle to pull the door closed, and the strap to open.
It might take me a while, and an explanation, but I'll get it eventually! thanks Curt Jim '72 911T (now in need of new RS door panels!) |
