Some of you make it sound like these cars are so temperamental that the slightest mod will rain fire and brimstone from above. I think it's safe to say these air cooled cars can take a little modification here and there and still survive. I mean they're still on the road now, 50+ years later, and we all know that most had previous owners that may not have been the most maintenance conscious. OP - if you like this piece and you can find one, or have one made, put it on your car if for the only reason is it looks bad ass :D |

The roof angle is much different on the new 911's.
You would need a wind tunnel to test the difference between the ram air effect and the low pressure area formed by the windshield slope. The grill is designed to let heat run upwards and out, and a low pressure area behind the windshield would help this at speed. Forcing air into it might work better at certain speeds, but it does look cool. As for the bug, they didn't convert their factory grille, they opened up another hole to allow heat to escape. That's a big difference. |

The black 911 in pictured just above sure is pretty. As for the scoop, I'd have questions. Not saying it doesn't work, but the grill area on a 911 is a lower pressure area, not the ideal place for a low scoop like that. And the "open area" of that scoop is substantially less than the plan area it feeds. The engine fan does a lot of the work to bring in air through the decklid grill, so a scoop like that may have limited benefit on an early 911. |

Decklid Air Scoop - Help Identify & Source
Given that the various engine fans pull between 1300-1500 l/sec (~2700-3100 cfm) which is a ton of air (a 20’x20’x8’ 2-car garage), it seems suspect that a small scoop that obscures most of the fan’s access to air would significantly increase the cfm.

RUF did have a scoop on some cars but iirc that was to aide in cooling the internet, not the engine. Again, not sure how effective. Singer puts naca ducts on the quarter windows and sends that air to the engine… not sure if that’s for show or backed up with data… I think one of the conclusions from Frere’s 911 book was that the fan does amazing and that a ducktail (or similarly shaped scoop) won’t increase the amount of air entering the engine bay but it might take some (tiny amount?) of the load off the fan… but this was all at race speeds where everything is a bit different that tooling around town… Now, do grille scoops limit the amount of dust and exhaust that gets pulled into the engine bay from the rear of the car… maybe, and that’s something to consider if you’ve ever taken your car into gravel or dry dirt roads! |
