Engine drop help needed...12 pin connector?

82 SC. Dropping my engine for the first time and need to disconnect this 12 pin connector at the rear of the engine. It was covered in electrical tape. I assume the original cover broke off. The wires appear to be soldered to the top and bottom of the pins. I can't figure out how to disconnect this thing so I can drop the engine? There doesn't appear to be two halves that come apart. I'm probably missing something totally obvious, so apologies in advance. Thanks. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1508090223.jpg

12-pin connector........

You are missing the cover or back portion. Before you try to separate the top from the bottom section, write down the wire pin color and double check again. As you could see, there two (2) bundles of wires one coming from the left side and the other from the right side.

Insert a flat screw driver in between the top and lower pieces. Slowly and gradually work it to separate. Pay attention to the top section because the pins would tend to move and get out in position. That is why it is important you have take a picture of the wire colors. Anyway, in case the pins got out, we could always set it back to their original positions.

Thanks guys. Since mine was missing the covers, I had to disconnect each wire one by one off the top. I took pics per Tony's advice. I also noticed that one of the lower wire connections had come loose...might explain some of my starting and running woes? Once the engine is out I'll trace it to see where it goes to.
Any idea where I could get a replacement cover? Thanks.

Check with Dennis Powell (Timmy2). He makes some 14-pin connector and might have the 12-pin connector too.

Thanks Tony. I'll check in with Dennis. Everything is now disconnected and engine is ready to drop. Have to fly out on a business trip in a few so I'll do the drop next weekend. Very excited to check everything, fix vacuum leaks, and have a strong running and reliable engine back in the car.

Coming through that connectors are signals for instruments and for starting the car.

No, For '80 to '83 the 12 pin connector near the shock tower is for the Lambda emissions system.

The 14 pin on the side of the rear engine fuse panel console has the wiring for instruments and engine start control among others.

997at, I will see what I have for 12 pin connector parts.
You photo shows you need both male and female lids and the female body to make it right.

I have nothing left for those.
My recommendation is to go with this kit of a male and female connector and install it. Just be sure to connect the right wires to each other. :)

I get that hollow stomach feeling like waiting for a questionable car to be smog tested, your boss asking you to close the door behind you as he invites you in whenever I have a 14 pin connector apart. I tie the dog up good & turn my phone to ignore... :D

Lol, too funny.
14 pin connectors are still available, just stupidly priced for the males as they only come in a kit for about $50. But, the lid in the kit is now too shallow for the older style wiring on the last few I have had to buy! Save the lids, it is usually the body that falls apart.

The female ones are available as separate pieces.

I might have a 12 pin connector left
