Oil leaks

76 911 targa

Running after few years of siting.
Needs new heat exchangers to begin with.

Two questions:
1. When under the engine while running I hear some kind of knocking noise, not consistent and seems like it is from the transmission area. I had the clutch seized but it's ok now.

2. Based on the video before what are your thoughts for the oil leaks? I know oil return lines will have to be changed but seems like a good amount is coming from or above the oil cooler. Oil hoses seem wet too.
Thank you.

Degrease the engine........

Are you planning to drop the engine? It would take a lot of effort to degrease and clean this engine. Your first goal is to get this engine look decent and remove all the accumulated dirt deposits if you want to determine where the leaks are coming from. With a clean and drier engine, finding the sources of these leak would be manageable. At this point, it is next to impossible to pin point where the leaks originated.

What's the best way of cleaning the engine?
I can't do in my garage nor on my driveway, definitely not at the car wash.

I second what Tony says about a clean engine is your best starting point. The common sources for leaks from the upper oil cooler area are oil pressure switch and oil thermostat. I would emphasize finding leaks is basic mechanical detective work with a rag, brake clean, a good light, and lots of observation. Rob

I put a big plastic sheet under the back of my car, donned old clothes, face shield, brushes and sprayed degreaser all over it and then started scrubbing. Kept the ground clean. Still had to hose off though.

If that is still too much of a mess for your situation, you could just start wiping it off by brush and rags with degreaser until it was clean enough.
