Inspecting a distributor
I want to investigate why my dizzy is leaking. Is the o-ring shot, etc. My Haynes manual indicates it should simply pull out after removing the lock nut (after setting #1 TDC). This is doesn't do - I don't want to force it out without knowing better.
So, should it pull out? Also, how much play should there be in the shaft? It moves up/down a small amount, as well as rotates cc/ccw a couple mm. Thanks. |
Greg,
If the engine block is warm ... the distributor will be easier to remove. Visible play is not acceptible on the distributor central shaft ... it should not be more than .004" maximum. Shims and/or fiber washer needs to to be replaced if vertical play is evident! Many commercial motor repair shops have suitable shims and fiber washers. There is not supposed to be much play before the centrifugal advance springs begin to offer resistance. The following thread has complete specs for your distributor posted in it ... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5432&highlight=distribu tor+lube |
Warren, that is an excellent thread! Would worn washers also explain the grease leak?
I don't suppose up/down and left/right play would have anything to do with my irregular idle problems, eh? :) Thanks! |
