1971 911T Hotrod/Outlaw
Hello, I am looking for a bit of advice, as I have come across what could be a great opportunity for me, but I don't know much about longhoods so I have come to seek input. Condition of the car (1971 911T) is pretty rough, but is a daily driver with 350k miles on the clock. Paint is toast...including the wheels, but there is little rust and the car is in good mechanical shape. There has been one rebuild around the 150k mark, so another may be in order sooner rather than later. I do not have the slightest idea as to what a fair price would be on this, nor do I know what it would take to make a decent outlaw out of this, or if it is worth it. My thoughts, at a glance are that the car is worth 25k give or take as she sits...but don't want to offend the owner with an offer. Interior is rough as well, but not destroyed.
If I had to explain what I would like out of the car it would be fairly simple... it would be driver, not looking for a 4.0 monster show car, but would like a decent suspension setup with a decent amount of horsepower, nothing crazy, but I am totally up for suggestions/input. Thanks in advance for any positive input. |

Hello and welcome to the forum! Are you able to post any photos of the car in questions? This will make it easier for our members to chime in and give you a fair assessment of how much it's worth/what to offer.

Owner and I have had a few talks since meeting him and we still haven't discussed a price...we have however, discussed visitation rights. My intentions will be to hold onto the car indefinitely.

I love the car the way it is too, rebuild the suspension and drive it. $25k seems pretty good, with a rebuild of the motor and suspension and "if" you wanted to paint it it's another $20k++ so $45 to $50

That car is sweet! Buy it before he changes his mind.
If it were mine, I'd put an awesome suspension in it, and a 3.6 with ITBS. The faded Irish Green is really cool, I wouldn't change the paint.

Work in Progress
|
I posted this in your other thread:
Having tried entering the porsche world via a project car I'd say you ought to pass on his and find what you really want. You'll spend less in the end and have more time behind he wheel than under the damn thing. They all have issues and need some tlc in places so if you want to tinker, worry not you'll get your chance. Its hard to guess at value without seeing one photo. 25 is more than I'd offer for the car you describe, but I'm anchored at old prices when a car like this was 7-10k. Assume you buy it for 25k and it needs at 12k engine rebuild, and 5k of interior, and 10k+ in paint work. Well damn we're over 50k and you haven't touched a 350k transmission or suspension. Not to mention that it will take you 3 years of not driving to get to this point. I'm probably being very conservative on both cost and time. If what you want is a long term project that will cost a lot, then this might be something for you to pursue. Certainly there are people, and you may be one of them, that have the talent, money, and time to restore this project. If that's you and a project is what you want then this 71t might be the perfect platform. From your description though it sounds like you want something to drive not a project. Sorry I'm not more help on pricing. I think the lack of photos is what's causing the limited number of guesses. (Other post had no photos). By the way you know you named yourself after the family dog? Cheers Rich After seeing the photos I'm still little help on pricing. I'd be concerned about rust. I've entered a lot of project cars thinking rust wasn't bad, until you pull the fenders, windshield, rocker covers, rear seats, rear window, etc. you're really only guessing. I can see why you like it. The car does have a lot oof character as it is. Maybe a mechanical refresh and drive it as is, could be a fun interesting car. Maybe find a used 3.0L and put the webers on it from the 71T. That will give you lots of motor for that little car.

+1^^^
I would have an expert in old 911s check it very carefully for rust. There can be a lot hiding on those old 911s, since they were not galvanized. IMO that would have a big impact on what you should offer.

Input has been great thus far...and all of the points have been well taken. The floor pans have been replaced, which leads me to believe there is other rust, although the owner says the car is completely solid. The next step is to get down to the logistics (numbers and inspections), but he needs some massaging. I approached him, so I am in a bit of a tough spot when it comes to negotiations...I can't be too aggressive. Last time we talked he told me he hasn't given it much thought, which contradicted our prior conversation where he told me he isn't attached to the car in the least.
In any event, have I mentioned I loved Irish Green...or what's left of it!?! |

Get a pre-purchase inspection (PPI) by a reputable Porsche indy shop. If you ask I am sure plenty will chime in about shops in Miami. You need to be wary about rust in the longitudinals and other areas which are not obvious or else you may pay the purchase price in rust repairs. Also get a leak down and see what shape the engine is in. A complete rebuild can cost up to $15k and a tranny $5k. These cars are not cheap unless you have sound mechanical skills. To me the car looks neglected, and unless the owner is Magnus, or a near Magnus, the car may require cubic dollars. I understand the cache behind rough Miss-matched paint, but unless it was done intentionally, the rest of the car will probably be the same unless the seller can provide you receipts detailing all the work done.
I know I sound like Debbie Downer, but I fell down the hole of lust and desire for a 72T and paid dearly not finding a loved example. $25K might be fair, but it is only fair if the rust and mechanicals pan out, or it may cost you another $25k to make it right. Get a PPI.

We honestly haven't gotten too far down the price line, but he is certainly aware of what they are fetching. Hagerty has the car at 31k in fair condition, and I'm not so certain it's even in fair condition, with that being said, are Hagerty estimates close to market prices?

Whatever you do, before price is discussed, get a PPI from a professional. Then and only then will you know evils lurk behind the petina of this 911. Do you homework or get ready for a ride down the slippery slope that can either put a big smile on your face or a scowl.

Read a bit, haven't had a follow up discussion as of yet with the owner of the 71' in Irish Green, but I will be giving him a buzz within the next few days or so. In any event, I stumbled across this and have reached out to the owner, no word back yet, but does anyone have any thoughts on this for me? Needs a motor, seats/carpet, and maybe a respray bc that green is bright!

Update...if anyone cares, the gentleman I was dealing with who had verbally agreed to 25k told me early this week that he wants 35k. I am still thinking about it, but since it needs a rebuild, paint (maybe rust), an interior refresh...I'm leaning towards passing.
In other news, I have found another car I am negotiating, 73' 911E, track prepped, in need of a engine, interior, driver and passenger windows, otherwise ready to go, but having a hard time placing a price on it. Already wider ST fenders (gaps a little off on frunk and tail), otherwise presents well. One light touch/accident on the track that seems to have been repaired pretty well. No clue on price, but thinking 20-23k!?! Coming with tranny and PMO carbs... |
