Shift Gate and factory short shift kit
 

Just bought my first 911, a 1983 SC coupe with a European 3.2L from an '84 Cab, and am begining to think about the first mods I want to make.

Are the shift gate (from Paragon) and the the factory shift kit (offered by Pelican) compatible with one another? If so, does the order of the installation matter? If not, which one would most people choose?

I am actually awaiting delivery of the car, so I haven't even experienced the 915 transmission yet. I installed a B&M short shift kit on my Boxster S and love it but wondering if the shift gate is more important as the 911 will be a track car and would hate to make a shift mistake at such high speeds.

I'm sure the Wevo is a fine product. The Gate Shift kit is compatible with all short shift kits on the market, factory type included. If you decide to go with that combination, I'd suggest installing the short shift kit first, adjust it, then retrofit it with the Gate Shift kit.

The WEVO 915 Shifter will do both things in one kit. The kit achieves a short shift ratio on par with the Factory style short shift and the springs return the lever to the middle plane (3rd & 4th) whenever neutral is selected.
Success in improving your 915 selection mechanism also requires that you inspect the bushes in your shift tube guide and the shift coupler.
The WEVO kit includes a new bush for the shift tube guide (914.424.224.00) and a new bucket bush (911.424.139.00) for the ball end of the lever, both these should be replaced when you perform a 915 shifter service or upgrade - regardless of which product you select.
Also with all 915 shifter service or upgrades - be prepared to adjust your shift coupler (between the rear seat footwells) to achieve the maximum precision from the gear selection system.

l just installed the factory short shift and shift gate in my 84.l had a weltmeister short shift before that and there`s a definite advantage to the extra new parts in the factory kit which tightened everything up,not just the shifter throw .l replaced the other bushings also.The wevo may be a further improvement but l didn`t want to afford it.l`ve made the mistake of saving my receipts...

I was all ready to buy the $600.00 deal myself until I drove a car with just the factory short shift kit. I was sold. Part of the problem with missing gears on occassion (at least for me) was the distance between them. With this kit the shifts are closer and the factory kit seems to tighten / firm up the whole mechanism.

I read somewhere that the factory short shift kit was actually built for shorter Porsche drivers, and not for any sort of performance increase.

IMHO, I'd drive the car for a while before you do anything. YOu may find that you need/want to spend your money elsewhere first. I had a car exactly like yours, and have driven both with and without the short shift kit. Shift kit has its own draw backs, and some don't like it more than the regular. YOu might start more cheaply by refreshing the bushings and coupling hardware in your shifter before dropping many more dollars for the shift kits. for what its worth.
