Fuel Expansion tank
I have a 1979 911SC, that I am adding an oil cooler on the drivers side. I want to know if I can delete the black expansion tank that is in the drivers side fender and add the clear expansion tank that came on later model cars that is located in the frunk?
Thanks. |

![]() Now you could relocate the charcoal canister into the frunk somewhere, but altho also requires reworking the vacuum lines that feed themes to the intake manifold a bit. My car didn't have a charcoal canister, so I had to make a system from scratch.

And yes, the charcoal canister is located at the rear of the car. |

That little in-line auxiliary expansion tank on later models still connects to the larger exp tank. The fittings for hoses differ. Not sure about the size of the other but they’re big for a reason and have to be sturdy enough not to collapse from the vacuum or swell from gas tank fumes.
Curious - I’d rather relo the horns (if that’s the hold up) and put the cooler on the original passenger side set up. BTW - Are you deleting the giant 2gal washer fluid tank in fender well and maybe putting in a generic 1 qt washer tank in the trunk too? |

I got rid of that big washer fluid tank years ago. This isn’t a daily driver, I don’t need a washer tank. Clean the bug off the windshield when I get gas. lol! |

I removed the expansion tank (catch tank?) in the driver's side front fender. I put a "duck bill" cover on the pipe that went to the old tank. This allows pressure from the gas tank to vent. I do not get gas smell in the garage. On a few occasions, I will smell some gas in that area, but hardly objectionable. I have kept the expansion tank tucked under the cowl ahead of the instruments.

Just getting back to this. I will have to get a picture but here's a description: Imagine a short rubber tube pinched shut at one end. The pinch has a slit in it to allow pressure to push through the pinched tube. Auto stores sell them.
Use your favorite search to find "images of duckbill drain valves"
