Triangle of death
The more I get familiar with this car (76 911 targa) the more I think I need to attack the triangle of death area. As far as I can see on top of the regular oil leaks prone areas some oil comes from above all, especially above the oil cooler area.
I have two questions: 1. Should I replace oil thermostat (working fine now) or just the o ring? 2. Is there diy step by step how to get to this area? Thank you |

76's aren't as bad as the 78-83's because there is less CIS gubbins to remove. You might be able to just do a partial drop and reach it that way but the CIS airbox is going to be in the way. I'm a big believer in if it's not broke don't fix it methodology. If it's not leaking and you "fix" it, you might actually cause it to leak. There are specific torque settings for the studs that the thermostat is bolted to. If you over tighten and snap those off you're in a world of hurt so be sure to check that.

Is there anyway to peak there and see if the leaks are coming from there?

I was wondering the same. I have a 88 Carrera but I would guess the technique is the same. I used my iphone camera. Just stick it in the back and take a whole bunch or pictures. It took a while but I finally got a picture that showed my triangle of death was clean and dry.
