CIS-lambda, bolt in on which engines?
Background
I have the original CIS-lambda system on my US-spec '80 SC. Unfortunately the engine has developed a heavy leak from the #8 bearing o-ring, so it needs a rebuild. However, all the reputable builders in Sweden have long waiting times for rebuilds and I like to drive my car. So I got the idea to find a replacement engine so I can have the rebuild done in good order when time permits or maybe even do it myself and still have a driveable car. Question On which engines is my injection system ('80 CIS-lambda) a straight bolt on, no modifications needed job? 1. All 3.0 SC engines (US and RoW)? 2. All 3.0 Carrera engines (US and RoW)? 3. The exact match to your injection is any USA engine 80 to 83
The euros, 76 to 81 are lower compression. The 3.2 needs the spacers and the ports maybe too large to seal with the smaller runners The 2.7 may accomodate the injection but you may need the smaller 2.7 throttle body. There will be a private message for you too Bruce |
Thanks for the input (and PM). I have a MTX-L installed in my system so I can adjust (closed loop) AFRs very precisely. That should allow me to accommodate a wide range of compression ratios, right?
If that is correct, then I should be able to go for any 76-81 engine (US and RoW) and maybe also 82-83 ones as well? Good to know that the 3.2 needs spacers and have different port sizes. Thanks! |
The 1980 US lambda CIS is a one-year-only system. It would probably bolt onto any 2.0-3.2 engine but I don't expect that it would work very well with most of them. Maybe there's enough flexibility and feedback built in the system to accommodate all the different displacements and compression ratios, but I would be very surprised if it were so.

My engine was rebuilt in '94 by a PO and was then built with higher compression RoW parts. So it's not all original as is but to me it runs well a t m. Could they have modified the injection-system somehow during the rebuild to accommodate the change in compression?
What are the main changes that the injections system “sees” when compression is changed? Cheers! |
I'm pretty sure that lamda system will only work on a non ROW as they did not use the lambda/o2 sensor.
My '83 row's AFR enrichment is controlled by the WUR/vacuum not a sensor. I suspect earlier models are similar....and the fuel control head is a different unit than US models. |
Yes, but the idea was to move the entire injection system from one block to another so as long as I can use the same exhaust system I have the O2 sensor to rely on.

Your 1980 CIS US Lambda intake system will work on 74-77 2.7 engines and all US 3.0 from 1980 to ‘83. This is due to the smaller intake porting on the heads. (2R runners)
The 78/79 US 3.0 and all years of ROW 3.0 have the larger intake systems (4R runners) You would need the right side chain case with a tapped hole for the Lambda system temp sensor as well. |

rebuild it yourself with the help on here.
I know of guys that have never rebuilt an engine and did it. |
My plan is indeed to rebuild it myself but I don't want to stress it so this is why I'm looking at another engine to put in there while I do the rebuild.
What is the ‘DV’? |
