My 912E build.

New to the forum and to being a Porsche owner

Spent many a year wanting a dreaming of owning a Porsche. After many years I was able to purchase one.

I have been a life long ACVW guy, builder and owner of a VW company Called VW LooseNuts. This opportunity to owner this Porsche came along and I sold my last ACVW build to purchase this Porsche project. It was in an accident about 15 years ago and has been stored in dry storage ever since. The motor and transmission as well as the rear section of wiring harness was removed for another 912E car that caught fire which kinda sucked but I didnít really care lol. Right now itís at the body shop in Eugene Oregon - BodyWorx getting the tub straightened out. Hoping to get it back on the road next summer.




Here are some pics of where I found it and where itís currently at.





Purchase some euro headlights



Found a type 4 motor and 901 transmission. Not correct but will work



Had some Weber 44s laying around so going to go that route




Found some real Fuchs also and a rear back glass as mine was broken in the accident

Looks like a 911/01 transmission but not sure the 901 & 911 may look the same.

Not sure I follow. The 901 was the early 911.

Cool car / project. Look up posts by "Fixer"....he built a sweet Type 4 powered (early) 912. Best of luck, John in CT.

912Es had a 923 transaxle.
Basically a 915 on the inside, but different on the outside.
Not sure a 901 is a direct replacement.

I get ya. But Iím not running the stock 912E motor that mates to the one year only 923. I am running a 914 Type 4 motor thatís will mate the the 901 1968 911 trans. The only thing that really makes the 923 different from the 901 is the input shaft with regard to mounting. I will have to convert my macanical speedo drive to electrical. But other hen that itís a direct swap.

Is it worth trying to adapt that transmission? That transmission is known to have a weak first gear.

To consider. What clutch do you have? What flywheel does your motor have? What axles are on your car? Do you have the clutch release arm or throw out bearing etc?

Looks like a great project and you are off to a good start, keep us posted.

Noted on the first gear. Thanks. I only paid $900 for the transmission and axles. So felt it will be worth the chance. They are a known good working unit.

Currently I do not have the clutch flywheel or pressure plate or throw out bearing. . I have the axles that came with this 901.

Here is the car is sold to by this Porsche and below that is my other car I just gifted to my daughter for her 18th birthday

No problem using that 911 gearbox on this build. It was good enough for a 2.2 S engine, so it’s goid enough for this. No compatibility issues. Just use 70-71 911/914 clutch Parts. You could even use a 74 speedo if you want to stay mechanical.

Jeremy,
I understand the 901/911 will bolt up to the engine, but there are differences in the clutch arm location and the tranny mount. That's what I am curious about.

These cars came with a type 4 2.0 with Ljet induction, but with a unique mounting arm.

Matt, the '70-'71 911 clutch used the pull style release arm. You know that Mickey Mouse deal where the bowden tube actually pushed the release arm. That will not work on the '68 box with out some mods. IMO you don't want to use those for anything anyway, AHIK.

As far as the clutch itself goes, it will depend on what flywheel and therefore the pressure plate you have. The '68 and '69 used a 215mm clutch, in '70 it was increased to 225mm. At any rate the '68 trans input shaft is the same as a VW so you have some flexibility as far as what clutch you use. The issue will be how to actuate what ever pressure plate you can get to work.

EDIT: Same thing applies to the '69 trans.

Jeremy,
You have a type 911 gearbox. It’s not a 901. That’s why it will work the way I’m saying. You are confusing people talking about a 901. Its 901 based but it’s magnesium versus aluminum and the clutch thing.

Then I guess Matt is correct. But that must not be a '68 trans like I though I read in your post.

BTW that is the casting number not the trans number. You will have some numbers stamped in the bottom, unless they have been worn away, which is possible. Should be something like 911 / 01 .

That trans is better than the 901 as it is somewhat stronger. You will have the dogleg shift pattern. You will need to change your shifter to the older style. Maybe Matt has some suggestions as how to get the fork pivot to last. I was getting two years on them. But that is a different story.

You will also, as mentioned, have to add the old style speedo cable and speedometer.

I have some spare 901/911 clutch pieces and a shifter available if you need them.
