odometer drive gear replacement
I just finished replacing the odometer drive gear, took about 20 minutes to replace, but finding the gear was a PITA.
I spoke to Brian Farmer from Einmalig (a local Porsche dismantler/retailer) at Pomona a while ago, he said he has the gears for sale for $45 each (new). That's pretty steep for a 2 cent plastic gear, but they're hard to find. I called him this morning before driving over there to get one, now they're $65! I reminded him of our conversation at Pomona, he said Porsche just came out with a new price list and that's what he goes by. BS. it's a VDO gear, what the heck does Porsche have to do with it? I doubt Porsche even lists it. That's the last time I ever call Einmalig. Anyhoo, I called around and found another place that had them, $40 plus tax and they're less than 15 minutes away. Cool. next is to adjust the speedo potentiometer. mine reads about 5 to 7% high near as I can tell. |

I'd love to hear where you found that gear for $40. I want one, but have been unable to find them here on the east coast.
Thanks, Rob |

I shouldn't really publish the name of the place, but if you want one I can get another and ship it to you. I just checked the reciept. I thought it was $40 plus $3 tax but it looks like he got me for $43 plus tax for a total of $46.50 Figure around $3.85 for shipping.
Evidently all shops who deal with VDO have to sign an agreement that states they will not sell any parts directly to the consumer. Either quality control, liability protection or a slick marketing ploy, who knows. BTW I also have another 150 mph speedo in good condition I might sell. Wow I can't believe you found a gear. Good job. I can't stand these dicks who don't sell stuff so they can corner the market. I had the same problem with dist. springs. I ended up buying some from Summit.

Our gauge guy rebuilds these for us - we charge $85 (I think that's our rate right now). For the cost of the gear being so high to the end consumer, having us rebuild it seems like a pretty good deal. Plus you get a warranty.
I rebuilt mine many years ago, and it broke again... -Wayne

Wayne, you might want to check on that price. every speedo place I called wanted between $110 and $120 to replace the gear, and I called almost all of them.
If I knew you could get it done for $85 I prolly would have jumped on it. We are still talking about an electronic speedo from an SC, right? |

Give a call to our guys in the morning 1-888-280-7799. It used to be $85, perhaps it's gone up? I don't know off the top of my head...
