A little help finding a wire please
The 3.6 wiring for the conversion is the biggest obsticle so far. That's probably because I'm electrically chalanged besides tapping into a wire to hook up a stereo.
I need a wire that is ONLY hot when the ignition is fully turned and while the starter is cranking. There's supposed to be one on the fuse panel in the luggage compartment. Can someone point one out? It's a 78SC. |
Paul,
There is just such a wire ... one of two Yellow ones on the SC starter solenoid, and it goes through the 14-pin connector on the relay/CDI panel! http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate...hematic-1s.jpg |
If you mean the compartment in front of the driver and not the engine compartment try the yellow wire going to terminal 87 of the red fuel pump relay. The yellow wire should go into a single wire connector after it leaves the relay rubber socket or base. You may be able to "piggyback" another wire there. This is a small guage wire so I wouldn't run excessive current through it . Cheers, Jim

Thanks.

Paul, In addition to Ingos excellent diagrams and the factory wiring diagrams, you might want to take a look at Jim Williams writeup on a 964 swap into his 78 SC. In addition Jim is a great guy. You might want to contact him for details.
As I recall only 1 or 2 pins need to be moved. <A href="http://members.rennlist.com/jimwms/1978SC/wiring.html">Jim Williams electric</A> |
Bill, thanks, I spoke to Ingo about it last night and after looking at his web site I realized that the wire colors are never going to match no matter how hard I looked. Ingo's web site cleared up what connects to what as the wires matched the two set ups exactly. I also printed out Jim's write up and it cleared up exactly what pin needs t obe moved and which connections in the front of the car need to be addresses. Your right, only one pin at the 14 pin connector needs to be moved. The remaining changes are in the engine compartment, which Jim's page makes very simple.
How's your 3.8 motor going? |
Case is done we're waiting on the heads. Weather up here has not helped.
I was very impressed by Ingo's write up, It's the best I've seen. Can you amplify on the color discrepancies that you have found. I was also thinking of posting some diagrams of the position and routing of the stock harnesses over the years that I have. Don't know if that would be helpful but maybe i'll try to scan them tomorrrow. |
Bill Ingo's color description is right on for my 93 964 wire harness at the motor:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads/14%20Pin.jpg The 74 14 pin connector is different as shown by Ingo: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads/14%20Pin 74.jpg My 78 reads as follows: 1. Yellow 2. Green 3. Blue 4. Green/Red 5. Green/White 6. Grey Brown 7. Blue/Yellow 8. Brown/White 9. Green/Yellow 10. Red/White 11. Blue 12. Black/Violet 13. Yellow/Black 14. Red The differences between the 964 (at motor) and 78SC (at chasis) are as follows: 2. SC=Green, 964 empty 3. SC = Blue, 964 = Yellow/Black 5. SC = Green/White, 964= Green Yellow 7. SC= Blue/Yellow, 964 = Blue Green 8. SC=Brown/White, 964=Brown/Blue 9. SC=Green/Yellow, 964 = Green/White 10. SC=Red/WHite, 964 = Red 13. SC=Yellow/Black, 964=Yellow Green 14. SC=Red, 964=empty If anyone knows what the corresponding colors are that would be great. Once I figure it out I'll see if Ingo will do a graph. |

I am still wondering why you would need a signal that is hot when the starter is cranking for the conversion. After reading Jim's explanations I was under the impression that you only need the ignition signal (15) and permanent power (30) to the DME harness. The DME will do the rest: Once it realizes flywheel movement via the pickup (cranking) it'll turn on the fuel pump via the DME relay. As I understand signal (15) is hot whenever the key is in the "run" position. It switches on one side of the DME relay and powers the ignitors and the injectors. The second circuit of the DME relay controls the fuel pump. The pump only runs while flywheel rotation is sensed. It's a safety feature. On older cars the fuel pump runs once the key is in the "run" position. On my 74 there isn't even a relay for the fuel pump. Am I missing something? Ingo |
