replacing hard oil lines to front cooler
Do I need to drain the oil in the tank and crankcase before I remove the supply side hard line to the front cooler from the thermostat? I was able to break the nut loose at the thermostat without damaging anything. I'm ready to pull the hard line but I cant remember how the bypass in the thermostat works when the car is cold. Is the supply line always open in the circuit? This is the only line I'm replacing right now, its the straight hard line that is not bent around the jack receiver that goes to the front PS cooler. I'm planning on changing the thermostat and the rest of the lines at a later date and am just trying to get the car up and running for now. I don't want remove this line and siphon 10qts+ of oil out through the thermostat onto the floor. Should I just drain everything and do an oil change while I'm in there?

How many miles on your oil? Over a year old?

Thermostat is always open to the front cooler. A while back I posted a thread called "How External Oil Thermostat Works - Illustration" that explains its operation. You should be able to search and find it. You'll need to drain the oil tank at least below the elevation of the thermostat.
