82 911 SC: vdo clock BBQ: Is this toast?!?

Hi Pelican -

The clock on my 911 SC stopped working recently after re-connecting the car's battery. I figured a fuse or something - but what I ultimately found is a pretty fried looking motherboard around a capacitor within the clock itself.

So this is a 2-part question: Is this thing altogether fried, or would a new capacitor likely fix it (provided I don't melt the whole thing in the repair process...!). Second part - what is this capacitor? Does anyone have a schematic for this thing? I have to disclose I have never done anything like this, and know little/nothing about electricity beyond the level of my sons snap-circuit toy... Any advice would be appreciated!

That look like a resistor, not a capacitor.

There has to be an electronic shop for geeks in Brooklyn.

Have them sell you the resistor. I am assuming these guys would know based on the color bands what the resistance range is.

Have them sell you a pencil soldering gun and a tube of electrical solder. Ask them if rosin or flux is desirable. Probably is. The rosin will come in a small bottle that will provide three lifetimes of use for noobs like us.

Maybe $17 out the door.

There is a thread about this common issue. Supposedly a few capacitors from radio shack and you’re good to go. It’s on my winter project list.

Thanks Bob for the A-Z! And you’re right - no shortage of geeks in the boro, but most of them are busy making pickles. I just need to find the one that knows how to tweak guitar effects pedals and I’ll be all set!

You should be able to order one from digikey or mouser. Those tracks are pretty stout. As long as you still have continuity on the tracks you should be able to solder in new components and fix it.

Resistors very rarely go bad so I'd look for another cause as to why it's cooked the board like that. Is the mechanism seized? You can test the resistor with a multimeter once you know the ohm rating of it and see if it's still good.

Took you advice, gazzerr, and found that the resistor is fine! Hot does not necessarily mean dead... Probed around a bit more and found that the 2nd capacitor in line seems to be dead, with no current getting through to the ground post. So it would seem that I need to track one of these down, which will likely be the toughest part of this pretty straightforward job. Thanks Pelican brain trust!

Cool you can get one of these cheap capacitor ESR testers and check test the capacitors in circuit. They just go bad when the electrolyte leaks out all over the place. If there's capacitors near the stain you see there it might be just that. It tends to have somewhat of a fishy smell.
