77 911 - Outside Door Handle - Repair Possible?

Hi All,

I went to open my driver's door and the little latch kinda like a trigger that you pull back on the outside door handle broke. I have an spare door handle that is broken in another area but that trigger piece is good. Can the door handle be dismantled and this part replaced? Door handle removed of course. I don't see an obvious roll pin or something holding it in.

There used to be a replacement trigger available. So that suggests the bits can be swapped over...

Pin pops right out carefully tapping with a small flat nose punch.

Hope you don't mind piggy backing on this thread....I have a somewhat related issue.

Re: the outside door handle on my '83 Targa - I have replaced the trigger assembly with an after market trigger so the door handle is working OK - the rod going in and out - but it is not opening the door itself.

I can open the door from the inside.

Just the outside door handle is not opening it.

Looking inside there's a plate the rod pushes against.

But doesn't look like anything else is moving.

Have sprayed plenty of lubricate and PB blaster.

Should I try moving that plate inside in and out by hand?

This is not my photo but in looking at it - the plate in the lower right corner is the one the rod is pushing into. Is that rod with the spring supposed to go back and forth? Just want to know what I should be looking for when the door handle trigger is pressed.

TIA!

Yes, you ought to be able to push your finger or thump against the plate and open the door

OK thanks, Harpo. I was trying to pry on it today and it wasn't moving. I made sure the lock wasn't engaged too. I have a friend coming over tomorrow so we'll try to get it figured out. Probably have to do an R&R. Always fun doing door stuff....
