NC Pelican Suspension Pan Clinic Photos!

Hey everyone- the rescheduled suspension pan clinic went down as planned this weekend. We had a nice turnout and got a '72T one step closer to being back in action!! In attendance were myself (dtw), jpnovak, l33t9eek, redducati750 (and a bud of his with a sweet M3), 1980SC, and 65-911. We missed jhelgeson-- where were you man!! Well I'll meet you next weekend for the swap meet and to pick up the tub.

The suspension pan and some patches found their way into Jekyll's tired tub with the help of our resident sheetmetal wizard, Dr. Jamie Novak. On to the photos:

The wizard reaches in for refreshment and motivation...

Prior to the lab, Jamie tacked in this section he sliced out of a '78SC Euro, which met an unfortunate end while testing the immovable object versus irresistable force question. Nice work Jamie!

Left to right: redducati750 and friend, jpnovak, 1980SC, and 65-911. I believe Tim (l33t9eek) was fishing chunks of his finger out of my trunk. Note to self: include an equipment safety primer next time...

Jamie and Tim go bobbing for rust. I love this photo

The completed product! The hour got too late for Jamie to tack the pan across the nose, but we got the tank support nicely buttoned up.

I'd like to thank all you guys for coming out, it was great meeting all of you and I hope Jamie and I were able to shed some light on the suspension pan replacement. Stay tuned, I'm planning bigger and better clinics. Next up: engine rebuild clinic, as soon as I get all the parts back and decide if what I'm going to build first: bone stock 2.4T, or the hotrod 2.4.

So what's up with the swap meet this weekend???

hey I reserve the right to retrive the rest of my finger.. where ever it is. The fingers fine if you can over look the chunks taken out, it's not bad.

I had a great time and I hope to do it again sometime. I'm in for the swap meet.

Tim's right. We measured diagonally from rearmost pickup to the front pickups. I had a good rough trial fit last week, then Jamie and I doublechecked all the measurements Sunday morning before everyone arrived. The up/down dimension is virtually self correcting by the cut marks I made in the nose, and all the other alignment points in the front of the tub.

We also got the nose installed and patched on Mr. Hyde, plus the passenger side cowl piece. With the help of the plasma torch, I hacked out the driver side jack tube that the "shop" screwed up. It was a total mess. That's next up on the repair list.

Damn. Now I have to dig up goodies for the Saturday swap meet.

Can't believe I missed out on that much beer. How much will it take for an engine build?

How much beer? When I tested the waters, about 20 people responded. We were thinking of doing it in a professional shop and getting a mini-keg. It certainly won't be in my garage, though it may be in zuffenhausen's 2 car garage if not the pro shop.

Thanks to all that showed up for the great time. Especially Tim for catching the hood as I constantly knocked out the factory lightweight hood support while diving into the trunk. Yep that would be the PVC support.

Tryan, Dave is correct. You can take a measurement from the rear most suspension pickup in the tub. I measured on each side to make sure it is far enough forward and then the two cross measurements to make sure its square. As long as the seams are cut carefully, the pan basically fits itself. Of course, Restoration Design does a great job with its stampings.

We will all have to do this again sometime. I guess I should have everyone up for a fit fiberglass body panel clinic and also an install the roll cage clinic. I even have a separate beer fridge.

Thanks Dave and Jamie,
That was good to see, I need to get to work on mine soon.

I think we all learned a lot about the process.

What is up with this swap meet? Can I get more info...

Thanks
Bruce

Yeah...what did we have to do? I think the pass. side of the pan needed a few hammer taps, and the driver side needed one bend split open for relief (only 1"-1.5"). Can't ask for much better than that.
