A Thrilling Engine Number Thread (With Bonus Project Sneakpeek)

Hi all,

To say I'm a long-time reader/lurker, first time poster would be something on an understatement. I thought I'd use this thread to introduce myself.

From the UK, live in California, owned 12 (I think) Porsches over the years. I've been lucky enough to be around a load more so hopefully, I'll be able to add some workable experience to the hivemind along the way.

Right now I am looking at acquiring a project Targa but I don't have any of my usual references to hand. (In this case, just The Porsche Book would have been my go to.)

The car comes with the following numbered engines:

6198166
6291549
6370126

I was wondering if anyone has a spare second to let me know what they are.

As promised, here's a couple of pics of the project:

Thank you and hello.

You need the engine type number (it's a 901/XX stamped on the case). That will tell you what model of car it originally came from.

I know that would be easy, right?

Sadly, the stuff is remote and I can't get that info for a really long time, this is all I have, so I need to look at which ranges the numbers fall into. Thought it might be nice to get the numbers out there too, in case anyone's looking for them.

Bugger!

OK, so by my guess (and reference material at hand - Wayne's engine book, p.201)

6198166
619XXXX probably is a 1969 911T, typ 901/03, although a build # of 8166 is pretty late.
6291549
629XXXX probably is a 1969 911E, typ 901/09
6370126
637XXXX probably is a later 1977 911 typ 911/81

Awesome, thank you so much! By way of reciprocation I'll confirm the above when I'm back home.

Is Dave up in Canada still verifying Kardex docs? What's the appropriate way of asking him about that? It's meant tone an E Targa so hopefully that second lump is correct.

Garage
My wife saw the title of this thread and laughed. Then she said maybe I should consider therapy.
