Question Welding Bung onto 1987 Oil Tank

I have a 3.2 engine and oil tank from 1987 Carrera installed in my 914. Would like to modify the oil tank outlet (tank outlet to engine) by welding a threaded bung onto the opening instead of having the rubber hose flange.

What material is the oil tank made out of? Steel with copper cladding? What type of bung to weld onto tank? Stainless steel or regular steel? Does anyone know of problems involving welding on these tanks?

Currently have rubber hose adapted to stainless wire/rubber interior going from the tank (shortened rubber oil hose, with clamps and treaded adaptor, attached to the stainless steel/rubber hose which goes to the supply side of the 3.2 engine. Keep getting leaks so I want to do a permanent fix by replacing the rubber hose/16mm threaded adaption with a welded bung on the tank.

My 77 has a stainless oil tank, my 69 has an SC (unknown year) oil tank that is also stainless.
Not sure what type of stainless, but its slightly magnetic.

I bet you 87 has a stainless to.

Thanks! This is great information. I need to test the material for slight magnetic properties then I can assume it is stainless with copper coating. Again, has anyone done any modifications to these tanks???

Thanks,

I modified a tank and used silver solder, a nice fillet around the tube I mounted.

I am also considering welding on an AN bung to my oil tank. I think the factory S hose is a Mickey Mouse setup.

I think brazing or silver solder would be the best choice. But I have not seen a post by anyone who has actually done the mod.

I have been trying to come up with some sort of adapter that would clamp to the tank and be able to use stainless braided hose with a 90 elbow.

BTW AN-20 hose will clamp on the tank's outlet. So if you don't need a 90 there, that could be an option.

Pictures to come.....

Here is my old setup. -20 hose with a heavy duty clamp. That is a Carrera tank.

Not sure what fitting this is? Seen at a car show.

Thanks everyone for the very helpful info. Will try to find a good welder to take care of the weld-on bung; alternate, will be something like Trackrash has shown in pictures. My adaption if I use the one from Trackrash is about six inches of stainless steel wire flex hose on a straight line to the main engine supply hose (parts needed for this method is s/steel wire flex hose 20AN, F/male str. fitting 20AN, 20AN (male) to 16AN (male) reducer); welding bung will require a 16AN bung and either silver solder or brazing?. My oil tank is located in the rear trunk behind the 901 transaxle and the supply line to the engine is 16AN. Either method should work and get me away from the original rubber adaption I presently have installed; need to eliminate potential oil hose rupture connecting the tank to the supply 16AN hose. I do not like the original "s" rubber hose on the 911 but factory parts are ok; do not buy one from China since I had one originally on the car which ruptured and left a 14qt tank empty. Definitely a mess to cleanup 14-15qts on the garage floor.
