As it appears that winter is skipping the Pacific Northwest I flew up to Vancouver, WA this past weekend and awoke my baby form hibernation, replaced the 5 year old batteries, fixed the "always on brake lights (as a result of pre-hibernation master brake cylinder replacement) and she ran flawlessly the 300 mile trip down to Klamath Falls, OR. This morning I started her up, though she was reluctant at first, and then she developed a peculiar problem. The tach is surging/fluctuating at all RPM's and falls to zero when I depress the clutch. Anyone have an idea on where to start looking, or better yet the always elusive quick, easy, and cheap fix?
All thoughts welcome.

points are the usual problem. barely opening, or dirty/burnt. the next reason is the battery loosing voltage from not being charged. next, the tach itself.

Thanks John. I will check the points straight away. The batteries are new OEM's from the dealer and the alternator light is not staying on -- so I am assuming that the batt's are getting their required juice.
