Post There is a brand "new" 1976 on Rennlist

Guy has had it in storage all these years. I was just wondering what a new 1978 911 cost in 1978? Also, will it fetch the 200K he is asking?

I only ask because I was wondering if something is that good of an investment. In other words, should we be buying new cars and shrink wrapping them for 25 years as an investment?

I have not seen the add but if you are saying that he is asking $200,000 for a 78 911 there is no way he will ever get even close to that for it. Even if it is brand new. My .02

It's a fairly simple calculation to figure out what any investment would have paid over the past 25 years. If the car were to sell for $200K then yes it would have been a pretty good investment by any standards.

However, it is unlikely to fetch 1/4 of that value on a good day - hence a terrible investment in the long run.

The only way to make money investing in cars is to get into speculation on rare models and hit it big in a boom, such as Ferraris or something like that. But a "buy and hold" strategy does not work otherwise with auto investments.

$200K? Doubtful. Maybe high book +25%? It will likely require some restoration (rubber stuff, etc...).

A car as a good investment? That would be, using the ubiquitous Porsche resale term, RARE.

My wife constantly reminds me about what a great investment all my hobby cars have been!
So what did a 78 cost new?

The car is a '76, not '78 - i.e, a 2.7 not SC.
Cars are hardly ever an investment, however you look at it IMHO.

I think a 78 sc targa in 78 cost $19,000 or $20,000. Not bad considering my 1980 MB240D cost $21,500 when I bought it in Dec 1979

Even if he got $200K from some unsuspecting wealthy fool, that would represent less than a 10% annualized return on his investment. Not something to write home about, since the same $20,000 invested elsewhere would have done better.

Unhappy

the only investment I got from my car is the $.75 that I found when I ripped up my old carpet in my 78 911 sc,

No, probably not. $20K invested in just about anything, compounded over 25 years, would be more than $200K, and you would not have had to pay insurance, storage, etc. The magic of compounding works over the course of 25 years.

But the question is moot because there is no way he is going to get anywhere near $200K for a '76 911!! Maybe an unused '73 RS or something, but not for what is arguably the worst and least desirable model of the illustrious 911 line.

BTW, I recently saw a copy of an invoice for a '78 SC, I think the bottom line price was $27K and change, reasonably equipped (fuchs, sunroof, air and partial leather).
