leaking tranmision fluid
 

I have a 72 911 T, with rebuilt motor and tranny. The tranny is leaking oil. It gets sprayed all over the top of the tranny, on the starter, mostley on the left side or starter side of the tranny. At first I thought it was the main input shaft seal, but now that I have taken the intakes off and the fuel injector off I can see that the flywheel and inside the tranny housing is dry. I feel it is comming out of the breather on the top of the tranny. Has anyone had a similar problem, and what is the sollution? Thanks, Mark

The vent or breather on the top of the transmission is probably in the wrong orientation, The small hole in the vent should be within the 90 degree sector facing forward. Cheers, Jim

thanks for the reply, but I have put the opening in the correct orientation, like you said and my manual says and there is still leakage. Can these breathers ever malfunction?

What color is the oil? It may not be coming from the transmission. It may be oil from an overfilled engine coming out of the air cleaner drain. Jim

No the oil is definatly tranny oil, it is always clean, golden, while the engine oil is dark brown, I've eve had to refill the tranny with about quaurt after about 500 km of highway driving @ 80 to 90 mph

Well this topic no longer belongs in the engine rebuild forum. Anyway, you may have lost a transmission detent access plug; see parts 20 and 23 in the below figures:

Check to see if one of these plugs is missing on your transmission. Some of the plugs screw in and some are tapped in with a slight interference fit.

Thanks for the info Jim. But I did seal those three nuts with high temperature silicone, because that was my first thought that they were leaking. I think what I will do when I get the intakes back in and the engine running, I will plug that breather hole, clean off the oil, and take for a rip up the highway. If it does'nt leak then that the problem, if it still leaks then it's something else.

Can Throttle Return Spring, short, at throttle socket, 911T (1973 1/2) CIS be used on my 72 911 T MFI throttles? I can't seem to find anyware a place that sell them for my car.

I don't think so, the '72 MFI spring (901.110.131.00) is a torsional type and the '73.5 CIS throttle socket spring (911.110.919.00) is an extension type spring. Perhaps Pelican Parts can order the MFI spring for you or if you have the remanents of the old spring you could try and get a match at an auto parts store or hardware store. Cheers, Jim

Thanks for the part numbers. Upon further examination, the springs are in pretty good nick, and iwas able to repair the one broken spring, just bent a new catch, it works great.
Well the only dilema is this tranny leak.
