Driving light thought
In carefully looking over the front of my 85 Carrera, ( applies equally to all 74-89 models), I wondered if there is a way to incorporate a driving light into the area where the rub-strip exists.
I'm thinking this.... The 4 headlight system used by certain GM cars ( Pontiac Grand Prix..some Olds models) use this incredibly shallow light bulb housing...like squinting eyes...not very tall at all compared to width...that would likely fit the same height spacing as the rub strip. Wonder if the housing can be made to fit..maybe using only the high beam pair... These can be mounted near the car's centerline..or maybe near the edges close to the turn signals..... Anyone else ever think of this possibility? It would be much "cleaner" than hanging aftermarket lights under the bumper. --Wil Ferch: ![]() |

One more thing....I'm not saying to remove the entire rub strip...just have enought of it removed to allow the light to fit in that spot...wherever it ends up..either near the ends near the turn signal..or close together near the center.

hmm, like cut two rectangular holes in the front middle of the bumper? Might work well and look good, but could be hard to mount them, and difficult to get the rubber deco strips to cut nicely. My thought is to cut the valence and mount them towards the middle right underneath the bumper, not as high, but would probably be relatively easy and could look like an original option.

Steve, either there.....or envision cutting a rectangular hole right next to the front turn signals.....so the lights are more outboard ( don't know if this location interferes with the bumper shocks though...I think it might). Might have to ( first) remove the bumper so the mounting bucket for these lights can be installed within the bumper..or even cut up the bumper *from below* to get access to a mounting bucket ( for those so inclined). If the rub strip can't be sectioned elegantly without a seam line showing, then a black graphic rub strip can be made up to take its place.
Another benefit besides a clean "within bumper" installation of the lights, is now you have two former fog-light holes that can be used for brake or oil cooling...using ( of course) sectioned pieces of the rear deck lid grill as elegant mesh coverings for the holes. ---Wil Ferch
