Using a regular socket and a plastic grocery bag works pretty well

Stobbarb (replace all the b with a d) makes a nice aluminum socket but man o man has it gotten expensive!!! I got one around 2000 when things for these cars were still reasonably priced!

thanx guys that helps, but what do you do if you have rusted nuts? steve

proporsche 11-21-2017 01:10 PM

rusted alu nut??

enzo1 11-21-2017 02:55 PM

Does "Non-Marring " work? I noticed pelican sells Hazet, any good? Also sells an aluminum one but says not intended for impact?...

hcoles 11-21-2017 03:04 PM

as mentioned above..... I also went to steel nuts. If you take the tires on/off often e.g. exchanging track or AX tires steel nuts hold up much better. Also makes the car look a bit more purposeful IMO. When you go to sell put the Gucci nuts back on.

Proporsche...i think something got lost in translation, or, did i miss the joke? steve

Lug nut socket

Buy the socket from Stoddard. Nice well made aluminum socket and it won't mar or scratch your lug nuts. Do not use with impact driver. $40 well spent.

Hi Steve..i thought when you said rusted nuts....you have the steel nuts on the car? If they are aluminium they cannot rust ..that is all,sorry;-)
If you have steel nuts and they are rusty ,use some heat on them for removing

Rusty Lug Nuts?

Anal me polished each nut on a wire wheel, clearcoated followed by 20 minutes in the oven to cure (co-ordinated with wifie’s weekly shopping expedition).
I use a six (6) sided socket, NOT 12 SIDED, and stick some masking tape on each of the six internal surfaces. Fitting is tight at first but works in nicely after the second or third nut. Hand tighten then torque down.
Pic shown is after about two years of service. Wheels have been off several times.

Amazon has a non marring 19mm, 1/2” socket for $10 and shipping is free with prime.

How do they make (claim) a steel, non-marring socket (without a plastic insert)?

To be clear, most "non-marring" sockets protect the wheel, not the lug nuts.

Found one that seems more cost-friendly:

Aluminum sockets won't mar anodized aluminum?

MrBonus 09-15-2021 10:30 AM

I like my nuts to have a little character. It shows the world I screw them on and off regularly.

Hey buddy not everybody wants to know how often you're screwing off your nuts.

Less so than harder materials. The plastic inner-lined sockets only last from disuse.
