Jack point with suspension disassembled?

I have my rear suspension apart, and discovered I now have to drop the engine. My spring plates are not back from the plater. Can I reinstall the torsion bar covers and use it as a jack point? Should a put the torsion bar in?

Tony,

Your car has 4 lift point brackets under the the car. Two at the front and two at the rear. You could see one (1) in your picture right below the torsion tube opening. The black squarish metal bracket in the above picture.

I wouldn't recommend using that as a jacking point... they are prone to failure as they can be rusted out and you won't know it until a critical point when it breaks off.

Are you familiar with the G-50 chassis?

Trakrat,

I don’t think you know what you were talking about. These are G-50 chassis that have 4 factory lifting points with special brackets/supports designed and built for raising the car. Do you have access to a ‘87~’89 to inspect?

take the spring plate apart and use just the torsion bar tube portion of the SP with bushing still in place (or have you already removed the bushings?) reattach to the chassis with the four cover bolts and support as you normally would. once the motor is free you can jack the significantly lightened chassis up & off the motor before sliding it out.

Few here have the experience and wisdom of Tony. PLEASE LISTEN TO HIM and use the lift points the factory intended. Older 911s don't have them, and a lot of effort by some pretty good engineers in Germany went into putting them there. I have an '87 also and never use any other method.

Lyle.

Bummer, didn’t think about the bushings, yes have already removed them. That won’t work..

I can’t use the factory jackpoint because I am on a 4 post lift with ramps, it’s not in line with the ramp as the car sits.

Maybe I will use the side points that have the plastic covers. Thanks guys.
