944 coil to replace failed coil on SC

I've had two coil failures in the past 1 1/2 years, one was the silver an made in Brazil the recent on was an MSD Blaster coil.

The MSD coil failed yesterday while I was out running my car which is 78 SC Targa.
Luckily I was close to home and made it back. It was dying out and starting back up and sometimes backfiring.

Pretty much figured out it was loosing ignition. When I got home I checked the CDI box and it was making that high pitch sound so knew it wasn't the problem.

So I pulled the coil off my 944 and hooked it up and it fired right up. A quick test ride indicated no problems, it ran fine.

I read most of the posts on here related to coil and CDI failures but have not seen anything about using a 944 coil for a replacement.

Just looking for any info on if anyone has tried this with success before I order a replacement.
I was thinking about trying a MSD Blaster High Vibration coil next. I know one thing for sure, I will keep a spare in the trunk in case this happens again and I'm not close to home.

The coils on a 944 are the same as used on a Carrera.
For your SC you need a black, good used Bosch 001

Not sure about the 944 coil.

PartsK*****K has a good replacement coil.

Was your MSD coil a 8222 version? It should work fine.

Hard to find good used black ones these days. I use MSD 8222 blaster coils and remove the sticker.

The MSD Blaster 2 coil was an 8202. Yep it's hard to find a good black one. I've searched Ebay today and did not find any.

I checked the failed coil with my meter and it is stone dead, only OL readings.

I'll try the MSD Blaster High Vibration one as recommendd

The 944 coil did start my car just don't know what effects it could have by using one for a replacement. I did not check the resistance values to see if there were similar to the other coils.

Thanks

Scott

I hear you. You can buy a $17 coil from Auto Zone for a 67 Chevy that will work.

However, I don't understand how long or how well.

I have the blaster coil on my 81 with the MSD 6AL box. Has worked fine for 15 years but what if I had put the 67 Chevy coil in when I went to MSD?

Hope someone can clear the air.

MSD High Vibration Blaster 2 is what you are looking for.
