No 2nd or 4th gear in 87 Carerra
Hello All,
It's been a while since I've asked for help here, but now I think I must. I recently had some much needed work done to my Targa that I think coincides with a problem that began last night. I basically can't get my gear shift to go into 2nd or 4th gear. It feels like there is some sort of physical obstruction there. The two things that I think could have something to do with it are as follows. First, about 6 weeks ago I had new shifter bushings installed. Prior to this 2/4 problem, things seemed just fine there. Second, I had a new carpet installed along with seats and such. The center console with the shifter seems a bit off center. Perhaps it always has been but I've only just noticed it. I can't be certain on that. Like I said, it seems like there is something physically blocking the shifter from going into the 2nd and 4th slots. Can somebody point me in the right direction here? Many thanks Carl

Shifting
Carl try this,
Go write to top of this page in blue--How to articles. Then go to left of page blue, Transmission, Shift linkage, etc. Then go down to , Shifting improvements. It is a good article to help you, plus there are many other s that have helped on here as well, regards. |

Being that both gears are at the bottom of the shift pattern, I would suspect the problem is in the front shifter area. Should be obvious after you pull the console.

Agree with John Walker.
Is it possible that whoever installed your new carpeting moved the shifter housing? If yes and it got moved too far aft, there might not be enough throw to engage 2/4. Do a search on G50 shifter, there are several applicable links. The How-to link referred to above isn't G50 specific.

Problem solved! It seems that the shifter bushing wasn't installed all the way on to the ball and it worked itself off and got lodged in between the shifter and the housing.
