Motec ign sensors
Hey you Motec guys. I've got a 3.2l Carrera base motor that is being converted to Motec. I've got the 964 dual distributor and stock flywheel (129 tooth with a tdc pin). What ign sensor(s) setup is best?

Haltech has a mode that specifically reads the Bosch Motronic flywheel sensor (60 -2 teeth). Does Motec have such a mode? Where are you seeing 129 teeth?

Yes, MOTEC does have this mode. The 129 teeth I counted is on the flywheel I'm currently using. It's based on a 3.2l Motronic. Has multiple teeth (129) for one sensor and a TDC pin for the other. After discussion with some guru's today, my options are: 1) different flywheel with the 60-2 or 2) move my ref sensing to a modified distributor. Option 2 would prevent motor from being removed but also required significant wiring harness mod. I'm opting for the different flywheel. Either way is $. I had a very small tranny leak anyway, so I'll try and address that at the same time. BTW, do you have a Haltech? Like it? |

John- I'm considering a Haltech. Any thoughts would be very helpful. Also if you know a distributor with good prices that would be great too.
dwightp - Are you running a M48? How are you liking it so far?

I am running a M48....(at least am trying to run a m48). Very nice so far but I'd be misleading you if I fully endorsed it yet. Motor's not running yet. I need to swap out a flywheel before this puppy will start. Then the fun begins. Then I'll be in a better position to give an opinion.

I've got number 2 - pickup in the dizzy.
I don't know what is best though, and I am running an older 3D system with a pretty simple setup (no airflow sensor).

I run an M48 with a crank sensor. Kind of a pain in the butt to mount, as I understand it (I feel competent in some things--this is not one of them, so a shop did it for me).
But it I had to do it over again, I hear the M800, the sucessor to the M48, is a significantly more capable unit, which is saying something. Dunno whether there is any difference when it comes to sensing signal, though. The M48, I can attest, is a pretty sweet unit, though. I'm all dialed in, and except for cold start, it is damn close to a factory EFI feel. Cold start is a ***** and a half. I've got it to where if I keep the rpms at 2000 for a half a minute, it will hold its own, with some wavering, until it gets warm (or warmer, at least). Warm, it's a dream. It's extremely cool to be on a dyno with real time air/fuel ratio measurement capacity, and get into the 3D Motec map and richen or lean out small specific areas of the rpm band in and out of boost, then do another run and watch your inputs take effect on your air/fuel adjustments... Typically, of course, on cars with OEM EFI, the factory has done about ten zillion such runs before it goes public with the car, so even a good aftermarket EFI set-up on a decent budget has a handicap of about 1000 hours dyno time, at least. But with patience it can be done pretty darn well. |

The engine management systems need to have a reference signal, and a trigger signal. Depending on manufacturer these signals can be called "home" "sync" etc
The motronic trigger finds "home" on the lost tooth, this is cyl 1 TDC. The motronic then counts teeth until the "trigger" signal is found, and then starts the firing sequence. Haltech is odd in that you only need 3 signals to fire a 911 engine. Other systems want you to have a crank and cam sensor. I am wary of that inre the cam timing can vary... ( read slack in the chain, on accel or decel) Like Cam said you can use the dist to supply the trigger signal, I am currently installing a Link EMS and have had it supplied to trigger from a 60 tooth (2 dropped teeth) wheel... (which is motronic) If you talk to the tech poeple prior to ordering your engine management you can have it configured to a trigger of your choice. Haltech seems to have the easiest interface I have seen so far its really easy to tune, Electromotive is a pain in the balls, Link looks easy, Wolf is OK, Motec looks user friendly as well.

Got the beast started today w/ the M48. The 60-2 flywheel and some fuel map mods beyond the vendor supported baseline program were required. Sounds great!!!! Have about a 1/2 day of tweeking before it's driveable......a little break in and then dyno tune. So far, the M48 is an impressive ECU. Nice interface and I'm sure I'll learn more about it as the tuning continues. Something about being able to look at a fuel and ignition map AND be able to change it and see the effects. Awesome. Let the fun begin!
Bruce, I second your comment on mounting the crank sensor with engine in car. I had to do several adjustments to it to eliminate it as a suspected problem. Can't offer any opinions on anything besides the Motronic and Motec 48 so far. I think I made the right decision in going with Motec for this project. It's Miller time!!!! More info to follow as the tuning continues....... |

Anyone know if the stock 993 crank trigger wheel is the 60-2 teeth type? I just want to confirm before I buy my haltech.
