Help! Towing Question/Concern
Hi All,
I'm a 1st time owner of a '71 911 and I need to transport my baby home. I want to flatbed the car home but i am concerned that there are no tow hooks at the front of the car to pull the car up on to the flatbed. From what i've read there should be an eye for a tow hook on the A-Arm where it connects to the body (there is not) or there should be an eye in the middle of the car just in front of the gas tank (there is not.) Where should the hooks go to pull the car up on the flatbed? I could get a u-haul auto trailer to tow but I would still have to winch the car up on the bed and I'm still concerned about where to connect the winch hook. Sorry if I sound anal but I don't want to screw anything up in the 1st week. There is not really enough room to turn the car around to get at it from the back and the car does not run.. thanks in advance... |
A good flat bed operator can pull the 911 up using straps on the front A-arms. Securing it for a long trip shouldn't present any problems. I have cars flat bedded all the time without any damage or related porblems.

Is the tool kit in the car? I think there should be a eye hook that screws into the car for towing?

A 911 is light enough that you can push it on a flatbed trailer by hand. Don't get too much of a run at it or you will send the car right off the front. If the car has Fuchs, you can run tie down straps through the spokes. I've done it several times that way. It's faster and easier than towing it onto the trailer.

Hello
All pre 74 911 have the tow hook welded to the center under the front fueltank support..... But you can bolt on later tow hooks easy. Rear hooks didn´t came on pre 74 stock. Grüsse |
If the car is lowered be sure to place a 2x4 between the ramp and the ground to prevent the nose or tail from hitting.

Roland, But there is no Tow hook in the center. It looks as if it broke off. I can just make out where it was welded to the support. Stomachmonkey, There was no tool kit with the car. But i think the screw in tow (or hook on) hooks was for later model cars in the rear... Kevin It doesn't sound as if pulling the car up on to a flatbed will be much of an issue... |
Indirectly related...I see quite a few people who, when towing their cars, cross the tow straps in front (i.e., RF wheel tied to LF portion of trailer). This is not good! If you have ever done the alignment on the car, you'll appreciate how this will get you back under the car quickly. Tie the straps straight ahead.
