Paint/Clear Coat Issues
My platinum '80SC Weissach has good paint except for the passenger door. I've check with the previous owners and they say it came from the factory that way. The problems is not the paint but the clear coat on the top of the door has yellowed and flaked off . You can take your fingernail and scrape off the flaking clear coat.
Has anyone had this problem? and Can the existing clearcoat be sanded off without damaging the paint and just reshoot the clearcoat? John '80 SC Weissach '91 Cab Tip |

Problem with Paint
Clear coat in the early to mid 80's had many problems just like you are describing. You should not spray clear coat without painting the base, or color coat first. Different manufacturers of paint have different specs for when and how to apply the clear coat, all say that there is a max time limit to when the clear coat must be applied to the base coat. A good painter can match the color and the germain made clear coats today are light years ahead of clear coats 20 years ago.
If you spray a clear coat over an existing color, it will eventually turn yellow and flake off again... |
