Don't bother - use Nikasil cylinders and JE pistons, and up that compression beyond the wimpy 8.5 level! The RS is not worth doing (IMHO) if you don't up that ratio...

I agree with Wayne.
I rebuilt my RS engine in October 2001 with Nikasil cylinders, 11.3:1 JE pistons, and GE-60 cams. I didn't have to change the ignition system as we've now got 98 RON fuel down here. The car is very fast. I think Wayne would recommend something like 9.8:1 for a single-plug engine that'll be used in the U.S. Matt Holcomb MFIWDP PRVC BOHICA 1974 911 Carrera 2.7 RoW 1974 Ford Falcon GT coupe Dedicated Homepage Engine Rebuild Homepage Porsche Owners Gallery Profile Pelican Gallery Profile |

Or if you want to stay completely Mahle they now have a set of 2.7 P/C with 9.5:1 compression. Don't know the cost though.

Wayne, is your rebuild book available yet? Thanks.

Wow that sounds great, is there a source where one can buy 2.7 nikasil cylinders seperately from the pistons (i think I've seen only the piston/cylinders sold together), or would I have to buy the mahle set, sell the mahle pistons, and then go for the high comp JE's?
Thanks, Brad

BTW Matt, tried to get to your site and couldn't get through for some reason. Have you had your car on a dyno since your engine rebuild? 11.3 CR is waaaay up there, I can't believe you can actually on straight 98 RON. Supposedly Research Octane Numbers are 4-5 higher than the (RON+MON)/2 used in the US (which would roughly equate to 93/94 octane in the U.S.) - which would lead me to believe that one could use at least 11:1 CR in the U.S. as well (which I've heard you can't do

EBS Racing sells reconditioned Cylinders, I think the price was around $995.00 the last time I checked, a set of JE Pistons is a similiar cost. For that price you may be able to get the Mahle P/C's, you would have to check with one of their distributors. Andial is one. www.andial.com there are others but I don't know who they are.
You can also look for a good set of used cylinders and get JE pistons. Generally unless something has happened the Nickasil cylinders are pretty robust and don't exhibit a lot of wear even after the rings/pistons have worn enough that you have to replace them. Just make sure that if you go that route that they have been checked for ovality and wear and meet specs. Spec's are less than .08mm wear from the installed size and .04mm ovality measured at 30mm below top edge of cylinder. You need to know the Cylinder size code in order to determine what the original diameter was in order to determine the wear. And then when you get the JE Pistons I would make sure that you give them the current cylinder measurements so they can ensure that the P/C clearances are within spec. Oh, and make sure the cylinders are all from the same height group, or that at least you have a set of 3 matching cylinders for each side. This is the route I was going to go with my motor, but I may go with the Mahle 2.8 P/C setup instead.

Thanks rvanderpyl! I've thought about the 2.8 pistons and cylinders, but I didn't think I'd be able to run that on street gas (even 93 or 94 octane) with the compression it would give me.

Mahle has a set of 2.8 P/C with 9:6.1 compression, perfect for a single plug street car.

Check using the 2.8L Mahle piston. You will need to find out if they have to be used with the 2.8 Cylinder head.
Check out the Bruce Anderson performance book. The original 2.8L pistons had domes on them to fill the 2.8L heads. Good luck, David Duffield |

Used Nikasil 2.7 cylinders are a dime a dozen - just tear apart one of those core 2.7 motors!
The book is due out in March! -Wayne

The 'low' compression 2.8 p/c are specially made as big bore kits for the 2.7 so they don't have the problem of the old RS 2.8 P/C domes.
Mahle Motorsports 888-255-1942 Mahle Distributors in North America are: Brumos Porsche 1-800-434-8514 Dallas European/Shoreline Imports 1-800-922-9300 IMC 1-800-382-3381 SSF Imported Auto Parts 1-800-632-2743 Andial 714-957-3900 www.andial.com Andial is the original distributor in NA and are probably the most knowledgable, however they are usually the most expensive as well. If you intend to go the big bore route then you MUST use a 7R case as the Cylinder spigots are oversized and any other Mag case just won't be strong enough after boring out.

According to BA, the 2.8 pistons can be used with either the 2.0L or 2.2L motor/heads. There will be a 1 or 1.5 point drop in compression, so you will wind up in the 9.5 range or so. I'm considering these to replace my RS pistons when it comes time to rebuild. -- Curt
