I am looking at a 1982 930 with under 40k miles. Totally stock. I know it needs according to seller's mechanic:
REAR SWAY BAR LINKS FRONT BRAKE CALIPERS 4 TIRES EXHAUST LEAKING NEEDS NEW FLEX (BOX) _ _ HOSE FROM THE HEATER TO THE HEATER CONTROL AC CONDENSER IS DAMAGED MAJOR TUNE UP IGNITION WIRES WIPER BLADES DRIVERS INSIDE DOOR LOCKING KNOB I would surely get a PPI done at an independent shop. Knowing just this, is asking price of $23.5k seem reasonable? Thanks, and looking forward to eventually becoming a Porsche owner. |

Reasonable, yes. Good deal? hard to say. What troubles me is the "major tuneup" I would ask what exactly he means by that and why. Low compression, poor leakdown test? If his idea of a major tunup does not involve busting into the motor then I wouldn't worry. But all in all, low 20's seems to be the going rate for good early 930's right now.

i would think that those items are all fairly minor. the main things to be concerned about are #1, the body, and #2 the engine. the body needs to be straight and accident free, with decent paint. a paint job is $5K-7k these days. and you don't want to get into a repaired, previously twisted hulk. the engine can set you back $10K. the rest is kind of minor and repairs won't break the bank. an 82 is euro graymarket, not that it really matters. the price is in the ballpark.

What's wrong with the calipers? 40K miles on the car and it requires new calipers? A new front pair of calipers is not cheap.
It's a gray-market car, so the original EPA and DOT papers should be provided in the sale. Strongly suggest an independent PPI. Dave Kochinski 85 Factory Slant 78 911SC RoW Nashua NH

I am new to these cars so I could be dead wrong but those sound like some odd problems for a low mileage vehicle. Very minor but still an odd assortment that would make me question how the car has been maintained.
I have sold a few cars and some of this stuff I would take care off before putting it up for sale. Calipers I can see freezing up from lack of use. How does one damage an AC condensor? Rear sway bar links, at 40 k they are a maintenance item? Door locking knob, is this a common problem on Pcars? I would do 2 different PPI's and DON'T tell them a thing about what you think is wrong and see what they find. Scott

I don't like grey market cars, as many have been chopped apart in order to meet Federal standards. Also try getting European fuel injection parts here in the states - virtually impossible, and technically illegal to import!

Your local Porsche dealer should be able to get the FI parts. Paying for them is another matter. That is when you go with EFI

I respectfully disagree. First - there are a lot of butchered 930's - domestic and grey market. I think that most all of the butchering shows up if you look closely. These cars are 20+ years old and poor examples are really long in the tooth at this point. Good cars are still tight and look right. Second - I have never heard of anyone getting stuck for parts on euro cars. I'm not saying it never happens, but I have never heard of it - and I have been reading the boards for a long time. Wayne probably knows better that I do -but that is my observatioin. From what I have seen in adds many of the American cars were change to euro fuel delivery for the increased flow on high horsepower cars. Plus with the internet and Fed-Ex, the world is alot smaller than it was 10 years ago. You can find almost anything and have it in a couple of days. Finally, I don't think the Feds are so worried about 20 year old cars that they are going to come and confiscate them, however I don't live in Ca. so I don't know what hoops you have there. In regars to the specific car - the caliper thing is strange - those brakes are very good and should last along time - pads and rotors yes ( even those have great longevity if not tracked) - but calipers? I also agree about the AC condensor - strange also. S**T does happen however on an old car. They are really fun to drive - have a very good PPI and enjoy Jeb '79 930 (Euro)

I'm with JEB on this one.
I've had 2 grey market 930's, and never had a problem getting parts of any kind! Bailey, If the car looks good take it to a good Porsche shop and get a second opinion. Bet the calipers can be rebuilt. The price seem about right, but try to get $1,000.00 knocked off for repairs. Good luck!!!
