What else should I do to my '80 SC while the seats are out?
Hi everyone!
Next month I will be removing the seats from my '80 SC Targa and taking them to a local upholsterer to have the butts of the seats replaced. I want to plan ahead for any work that will be good to do while those seats aren't in the way. Here is what I have planned so far: - Replace the shift coupler (following Wayne's directions and using the Wevo Precision Shift Joint and billet coupler clamp). - Access the fresh air controls and see what the problem is there (fresh air blower works, it's new; engine compartment blowers seem to work because turning to max defrost makes an impact). I'm wondering if there is some issue with the wiring between the control and the blower. But anyway, I'll diagnose it... - Run the wire up the windshield pillar and down to the Bluetooth unit added to my original Blaupunkt radio by chromelondon. Are there others things I should think about while the seats are out of the way? Thanks! Todd |
Check for lost French fries.

You can always open a can of worms, the pedal cluster bushings come to mind, throttles have been known to stick, especially on 1980 targas! The bronze bushing upgrade is cheap and easy, easier with seats out.
Shifter bushings since you are doing the coupler |
How about those 37 year old fuel lines:eek::eek:

Tunnel bushing and shift lever ball bushing to compliment your coupler project. Get It tight!

A good time to adjust the parking brake, which should take 3 clicks to hold the car on a hill.

Also a good time install a fire extinguisher bracket/extinguisher. Maybe also replace the seat bolts with new hardware.

i take the seats out every year to do a good vacuuming and cleaning , its not like its a major " while the engine is out" type thing.
Once you take them out you will wonder what took you so long. I installed a low profile sub under my drives seat though. |
Peek under the carpets for signs of rust on the floors. Probably not an issue on a 1980, but certainly on the older cars.

Agree with everything you can look at and refresh with regard to the pedals and shifter which you said you were planning to do. So much easier to deal with when seats are out. A report back on how much spare change, food, lost tools, etc. you find inside if its truly been awhile is always appreciated.
